Im an uber hacker... apparently

I develop web sites and provide hosting for sme's for a living, Ive got a bit an odd problem at the moment, I've got a dispute with a client trying to get out of paying a bill, not the first time, and I doubt it will be the last so I can just pass that on the the debt collector to deal with.

The odd bit is the clients latest email, since his hosting account was suspended for non payment they have emailed me accusing me of changing passwords on other unrelated accounts, even doing something to their Internet Provider.

Now while the uber hacker title is quite cool among the hacker community I'm not really keen on the accusations around my day to day business.

I'm thinking get a solicitors letter sent regarding the accusations to nip it in the bud but I dont really have any experience with this.

Any suggestions?

Do that, nip it in the bud - uber hacker is a nice title, but hacker is generally perceived as bad, so it's not something you want to have around your day-to-day business image.

I'm sure they wouldn't like to be sued for libel or slander, so quietly requesting them not to make such spurious allegations would be a good idea.

Used to get an issue with kids playing network hacking all the time when I worked at a college, in the IT dept. The same old story, as above. In fact it was the most annoying, childish, 'oh look at me look how crap the college is' kind of pursuit a smelly young goit could waste his time with. Why not spend time squeezing spots instead?

Fact of the matter is, every time one of these pre-pubescent plebs actually managed to gain access to a folder they didn't originally know was there, some lecturer would see and the whole IT infrastructure would be hauled over the coals and we would have to waste our time plugging this 'hole' and justifying and recording details of the incident. Not to mention that all the staff would go back to saving stuff on floppy disks and call us about twenty times a day because they were shite and they kept losing them and wanting the data from a backup, which we would have to look for and wouldn't be able to find because they'd ONLY saved it on a disk.

Back to the OP> I'd have a quick back-and-forth with the hosting company, maybe they can supply you with a changelog for the account (dates passwords were changed?) and you could send that off. Make a couple of copies of a letter, send one to yourself and one to your 'client' and see if it does the trick...

I cracked the college FTP server when I was there. Sent an email to the admin and he fixed the problem with thanks.

That was a while ago, though, and yes, I did think hacking was cool. (Having just watched The Matrix...)

To Powelly: if you were to get a solicitor involved I don't think you'd have much of a case unfortunately unless he was actually being libelious (by saying it to all and sundry).

Just tell him to stop being such a damn foo'.

I've done the same, and a lot of the time it's been "look, here are the holes - FIX them, before someone who isn't as nice as me, does some serious damage... seems better than letting them fall on their arses regardless

And Hackers.. inaccurate, but fun enough to watch ... wouldn't complain waking up as Acid Burn, but maybe that's just me..

Still remember a whole class in IT all using proxy for browing all playing games and the teacher thinking wtf, and when my mate went on midjet porn, funny days.
