Posted: 19:18 - 08 Aug 2008 Post subject: Another chicken strip question.... |
 |
|
Really pissing me off now this is.
Had my new tyre fitted about 150 miles ago (old one was a 150 instead of a 130).
The old tyre had quite big strips, which i put down to the tyre being too big,but now i still have them?
I followed my uncle who has no chicken strips at all,and matched his speed into every corner (at times a little way past my comfort zone) and yet the strips are still there .
What am i doing wrong now?
The rear tyre is a 130/80/17---- front is 110/70/17 will that make any difference?
I know it shouldn't matter anyway, but when at meets and things it does matter,it's embarrasing ..help ____________________ DRZ-400sm |

Dont forget it takes a while to wear then down. The few secs you spend on the outer edge while lent over will not wear it much.
Could also be you are hanging off the bike more than your uncle.
Just forget about them... ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

The first cb5 closest to the camera, you can just see the rear tyre in this pic. BT45
The comment about crashing if i keep trying is the feeling i've been getting lately, but i have been that determined to get rid of them,i've been going out with all my gear on expecting to fall off trying.I am going a bit too far really.
Will try and get a mate to follow me on camera at my normal riding pace, see if you lot can give me some pointers ____________________ DRZ-400sm

Well that could be my problem right there!
I allways take a racing line (be it on bike or in the car).
I see what you mean about the lean angle aswell,it looked like if i was to go right over the exhaust would bottom out,but i haven't actually had it bottom out yet... ____________________ DRZ-400sm |

Buy some race scrubs, the edges are overheated and the rubber is shredded but the middles are like new. I had some for my VFR, they were sticky as snot and made the bike handle like a dream as it didnt want to be upright and was only happy at a 45degree lean angle Plus if anyone checks out your chicken strips at a meet you look like a maniac and all your elbow down stories will be believable |

Hit a round about go reasonably slow but lean well over and do a few laps that will sort the right hand side but im fucked if i can come up with an answer for the left mine just seem to go of their own accord after a couple of good blasts but mines a 12R and like the guys have said yours is not a bike that i would expect to see with no chicken strips due to it being an all rounder and not a sports bike so as said before take it easy before you take a spill and wait until you get a supersport before you start worrying about em ____________________ Kiss my ASS im gone. current ZX12R previous ZZR1100,Gpz1100 uni,GT750,VT500,CX500

I've got Maxxis tyres and my rear ones are near enough gone, i don't care about them it's just i lean into corners as thats my riding style. I hate hanging off. I'm not even fast at cornering so it doesn't mean/prove anything. ____________________ |--Previous--|:2007 Aprilia SX50... --Current--|: 2007 Kawasaki ER-6N

Newbie riders (and/or slower riders) are bothered about how much they can lean the bike and how small their chicken strips are, the smaller your chicken strips are the better rider you are.
People who're actually fast are more interested in keeping the bike as up as possible around corners since the more leant over your bike is, the smaller the footprint that's in contact with tarmac. Bike that's leant right over with a smaller footprint can put less power through the tyre, therefore the more upright you can keep your bike the more power you're able to put down which means going faster.
Misconceptions of expert newbies. |

It was never about getting rid of them for showing off sake.(if that's all i wanted i could have rubbed them off with wet&dry!
(although, there is a bit of image involved aswell)
What i've been thinking is that by having chicken strips i'm not cornering as fast as i should/could be.
Then seeing other peoples bikes not having them really had me thinking i was cornering wrong/riding too slow.
If i didn't have them ,then id be at a good riding standard.
I still feel like i'm far too slow going round the tighter bends and have very little confidence going round tight roundabouts, but i have loads of confidence cornering at high speeds (that probably sounds odd).
Maybe it's just the slower speeds that i'm not leaning enough on.
I thank everyone for their input, but i just dont see any way around this other than maybe paying for extra instructor training/or hope more time on the road will do it. ____________________ DRZ-400sm |
