How advisable is not booking a ferry ticket home and instead turning up at Calais and asking for a ticket back? or maybe Holland -> Hull (to save on UK motorway miles).
As said my route is as yet still being planned , and I'll probably do Spain for 5 days and dog leg it back via the South of France N85 Switzerland Germany then Calais maybe Holland ferry back to Hull.
Also this book
yay or nay?

Oh also petrol lamps worth the space or not? , might be doing some rough camping..
Any thoughts?

Nah Maurice I mean one of these

a petrol lamp, I already have a Coleman 442
But thanks for the info anyways I think I shall book in advance and attempt to get there ontime, I mean if it cost me £20 for the ticket last time and £30 to change it I'm still better off booking in advance..

When i went to Spain last year i booked an outbound ferry but not the return, ended up paying 50-60 pound in Calais at around midnight on a weekday for Calais->Dover
Yesterday i got back from Amsterdam, I had booked the ferry on monday, found out about the french fisherman/dockworker strike the next day, considered canceling with P+O, but with the threat of a 30 pound cancellation fee (return ticket was 42 pound), and the assurances that there would be sailings, i was delayed by 3-4 hours getting to france (no point waking up at 4am to sit in a carpark), and the return leg was cancelled altogether, they gave me a voucher for the Eurotunnel, which was faster anyway.
I have been looking on the Eurotunnel website and we can get a ticket for the next morning for 11 quid each way... Cheaper, Faster and far more reliable. The ferry is good for getting some sleep before riding, but i'll be using the tunnel from now on |

I dont know but 24 pound return is a bargain for a no frills fast crossing (once you get on the massive freight train),
I hear Eurotunnel are reporting profits this year,
This week i are mostly been buying eurotunnel stock |
