Ahhh more nails in the coffin. Nowadays there is more to the operating system world than Microsoft. Since switching to Linux at home I've never looked back. The other half likes it, the kids (age 4 and 5) like the kiddie games and educational stuff on it. Can't remember the last time I used a Windows box. At work we are Mac based, so it's always Unix/Unix like stuff for me. Thumbs Up

So 1/3rd of people who bought vista pc's either bought pc's of too low a spec to use it or couldn't deal with the new interface so switched back to a dated system?

Fair enough..

This is basically the problem, vusta preloads common apps into the memory to make them run faster the problem with this is many people try to run vista with out 1gb of memory which is clearly not enough. I have been running vista on 2 machines and both have had 4gb of memory and both have been brilliant, my only complaint is the 64bit version being force to have 'signed' drivers, well that and the fact it seems to take so many clicks to get to the 'Network connections' window.

People complain it is to resource hungry, well so is XP compare to 2000/ME. Get with the times, DDR2 ram aint dear upgrade your PC or stick with XP.

The was the same shit being brought up when XP came out, now Vista is out XP is the golden child.

And I'm sure when the next version is out people will be scared of it as well, call it terrible but will quietly switch to it when they get round to upgrading their pc's.

I have gone back to using XP since vista and it feels awful in comparison, they've come on leaps and bounds since XP. I laugh when I hear people saying they are switching back.

If you really don't get on with vista then try out linux, its a bit complex but it works well.

Couldn't agree more - thought I was going to have major issues with it, but have had no problems at all - it runs like a dream Thumbs Up

Initally had a few quips when it first came out due to the non-existence of drivers for any of the software I was using, but then thats the case for any new operating system I suppose. Other than that its been plain sailing really.

I use SuSe at home, it works great, Linux definately out performs Windows and I run a virtual version of windows for the things I cant run on Linux.

Biggest problem with Vista is the occasional program that won't run on it.

The main one for me is the server software for my media streaming box.

To get round it I just run a copy of VMWare Workstation and have XP running under that. Works like a charm

Not only does the article prove anything, it's based on a survey "of over 3000 computers" and they "estimated" the percentage.

Fail.

Disregarding the article, although twas amusing to read.

If vista is so fantastic, why are they talking very seriously about the so called Windows 7, vista has barely been out five minutes.

I take no interest in operating systems or software side of computers, it annoys me too much. Hard enough trying to keep up with hardware developments, so the above is a genuine question.

XP was super stable when it was released everyone singing its praises (blue screens a thing of the past etc), now, over time, it reverts to the slow decay indicative of all MS operating systems, your computer takes longer to boot up, longer to do everything, more errors etc as crap accumulates, and windows proves to be frail once again.

Vista will do the same in time, they are all one and the same.

Why can't they design a platform and stick with it, not keep inventing the wheel every few years. They have surely had long enough to gauge what people like and don't like to make a decent 'standard'.

Quite the opposite, XP's release heralded a pretty big uproar over DRM and privacy, not to mention the myriad of backdoors available until service pack 2 was released.

Vista isn't the evil it's made out to be and given a PC of sufficient spec, its the superior long term OS for 9/10 average home users over XP, but compared to rivals like OSX and Ubuntu, its horrifically bloated and a little too rife with inefficient quirks whilst not really being any more reliable or stable.

Budget laptops like the EEPC and it's clones are probably the biggest threat microsoft has ever faced as they are doing wonders for getting people to dabble and see the merits of alternative operating systems. With PC use getting more and more web centric, the OS is starting to play second fiddle to the web browser and the more people see this, the more Microsoft's grip on the market weakens.

Hopefully MS will take Windows 7 seriously and put out a proper evolutionary product thats in touch with what the market really needs ala Intel and the Core 2.

They could do what Apple did with OS X, which was to take the BSD kernel (which is licensed for free under the MIT license without the restrictions of the GPL, which GNU/Linux is distributed under, so you don't have to redistribute it or it's modifications freely), and modify it, building a proprietary GUI on top. It's there on a plate for them, already made. Look at OS X - a great secure, stable OS that gets faster and more efficient with each release. It's basically a Unix core. Oh well...

I can't understand why XP users continually lay into Vista? What exactly are they scared of?

I have never had any problems with Vista, I can do exactly what I did with XP and be more satisfied I am not using a cheap lego set like the block colours of XP.

Runs a lot faster as well.

Well I use XP at work and Vista at home.

Nothing at all wrong with Vista as long as it comes on the PC you buy (and has enough RAM).

I'd never "upgrade" from XP to Vista though if it was going to cost money. There is too little difference to make it worthwhile.

Vista should really have been called XP Service Pack 3.

My desktop has Vista which has never been anything except reliable. My little Advent Netbook has XP on it and it definitely feels like taking a step back in OS when using it, although I doubt it could run Vista very well.

Today I removed Vista from three brand-new Dells for a customer and replaced it with XP-Pro. When I set up her network I left it with three PCs that were able to share one printer. Next time she turned the network on only the directly-connected PC could communicate with it. I managed to get the other two talking to it again, but attempts to print caused havoc. On brand-new systems. No internet connection at the time, so no virii or trojans etc. No new apps loaded. Just Vista doing it's usual SHITE.

Vista is a fvcking TOILET, and MS should be prosecuted and fined out of existence for the criminal fraud they have perpetrated against the public with it.

That's the genius of Vista, it's complete lack of consistency and reliability. Some give me no trouble at all, others give me trouble with X but not Y, where another will give me trouble with Y but not X.

It's a steaming pile of shite, and the statistic shown via the link in the OP proves it. MS even admitted they shipped Vista with a semi-functional sound sub-system, and defended their criminally fraudulent action with the excuse that "To fix it would have further delayed Vista's release. We'll patch it later." Still waiting for that particular patch, you lying filth. Supposed to have been done in SP1, but wasn't. Along with a whole bunch of other stuff. How are those NVidia-drivers working out for ya MS? Got that act together yet, or are NVidia users still suffering random BSODs? Rhetorical question, it's all over the fvcking net.

And gee, what was MS' response to the huge numbers of people up-grading from Vista to XP? Anything helpful, or ethical? Nah...they just put up the price of XP by approx 100%. OEM copy of Pro used to be £55. Overnight it went to £115. "That's it guys, we'll price the upgrade out of most peoples' reach."

Low-life scum. Lying, cheating, conniving filth.

My customer, she paid £135 each for five copies of Office 2007. The app was pre-installed by the PC supplier. From master-discs he had to PAY for. Customer gets no copies. Now she's wiped Vista and put on XP...hmm...how's she going to get Office back on? I suppose she could pay the PC supplier to travel 50 miles to re-install it for her. Or maybe download it from the MS website, only to find the card-codes won't work for some reason (been there, done that etc, multiple times in one flavour or another).

So, for £135 what do you get? A card with a code-number on it, so you can un-lock a pre-installed trial-version. And if your OS goes down and you have to reinstall it from scratch..."here's the Office hoops baby! Get running, get jumping, you didn't think you paid £135 per copy for convenience did you?!"

I'm not sure exactly how many MS top-level staff are the sub-human degenerate vermin responsible for this despicable state of affairs, but if they ever get cancer I hope I get to hear about it so I can laugh until I fvcking cry.

I will agree with you that the price for office is criminal, I will never pay for office. I could have paid £20 as a student for it, but even then I decided that was too much..

I would suggest open office, its not amazing but it works and does pretty much everything Microsoft Office does; plus its free Very Happy.

To be honest only reason I like using windows is for the gaming element, soon as linux cracks that well, I'm done with windows.

I use Office-XP 2003, cracked and free. God only knows how many customers' PCs I've put it on. I've been fvcking MS in the ass for over ten years and have cost them thousands. How many customers jumped from Win-98 to 2000-Pro to XP and didn't have to pay a penny. Laughing
