I have been running the tank on empty for a few days with the light on and finally went to fill up on the way home from work only to find that I could not get the cap to unlock. I've a Kawasaki ER6N, 500miles, so have only filled up a couple of times.
I got back home and starting trying to unlock it then managed to twist the key a little too much so it won't go in the ignition.
I sprayed a little DD40 onto the cap and that seemed to work, only now I have one knackered key.
Where should I go to get a new key without going back to the dealer/how much should it cost (I have the serial number)
cheers
chris

if he charges you more than £35 get a race petrol tank filler cap, froggy had one where the entire filler cap comes out when you lock it, but if it has broken in <500 miles surely this should be covered by warranty?

Any key cutting place will be able to cut a new one from the spare you should have.

Often you may find you have to push the cap down a bit before twisting the key. But if this is a brand new bike i would be going back to the dealer and asking them to sort the problem.

Once you safely have a new key cut... carefully heat up the old one and see if it will bend back in a vice (put it in vice and close vice up, not clamp one bit then try to bend it.. if that makes sense?) keys are kinda brittle, BUT I've bent back 2 keys easy enough and still going strong today so it is possible and worth trying...

When it happened to me I fixed it with a hammer. I was on a petrol forecourt and had no choice. Laughing

Kaw keys are made from butter, you can straigten them with your fingers.. Wink

& all kaw's use the same lock design on the tank, just press down a bit on the cap as you turn the key... & also use the key when you close it.. at least until the lock loosens up a bit, usually around 90,000 miles IME

Get a pencil and scrible all over the key the graphite lubs the lock and mades it easier to turn, a bit of 3in1 would go a miss either.

The keys bend back really easy just put it back in the lock and turn the other way.
