Hi

I'm sure this has been covered before but buggered if I can find it.

Basically thinking of getting a daytime MOT on the M6 for shits and giggles, but want to know the requirements.

Thought I'd post here before I nag a MOT garage.

TIA Thumbs Up

Hi

Difficult. There is no such thing as a Daytime MOT, it is just doing lots of fiddles that a careful reading of the MOT books makes legal.

The MOT will have an advisory about the lights, but technically that would not stop it being ridden at night (though they would do you for other things).

Basically the rear position light is the one that makes most of the others compulsory. Omit that and you can, with a friendly MOT tester, read the rules that you can avoid having the other lights.

All the best

Keith

Search for 'daylight mot' without the quotes.

As far as I can tell you need a horn, rear reflector and an exhaust not marked 'not for road use' (although the rules on that may have changed anyhow as it's now by how much noise). Some testers insist on a rear brake light. You might have to travel to find a tester willing to do it as well.

MOT testers manual

Quote:
Front and Rear Position Lamps
This inspection applies to: all machines, except those which have neither front nor rear position lamps, or have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are
. only used during daylight hours, and
. not used at times of seriously reduced visibility

If this situation occurs the machine presenter should be issued with a VT32 (advisory notice) recording the above.

1.3 Stoplamps
This inspection applies to; all machines except those which have neither front nor rear position lamps, or has such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are
. only used during daylight hours, and
. not used at times of seriously reduced visibility

If this situation occurs the vehicle presenter should be issued with a VT32 (advisory notice) recording the above.

Exemptions
For this test if a stop lamp is fitted, it must meet the requirements of this inspection, but need not be fitted to a machine which:

a. cannot exceed 25mph, or
b. was first used before 1 January I936.or
c. was first used before 1 April 1986 and which has an engine capacity of less than 50cc.

Machines first used before 1 April 1986 must have a stop lamp that operates from both brake controls.
However, a small number of machines first used from this date were approved with the stop lamp operated by only one control. A machine should only be failed if you are certain that it was originally manufactured to operate from both controls

I just phoned up my local garage and all I need is a number plate, a horn and a reflector.

Think I shall get it done and ride it to bulldog.

You could argue it doesn't need the reflector, as that is another inspection that says it only applies for bikes fitted with lights. However it also mentions the reflector as a statutory light. The requirements for indicators are similar (ie, test mentioned as only applying to vehicles with side lights, but also mentioned as being statutory lights).

Brake light is probably a good idea.

All the best

A brake light for test purposes would mean I'd need all the other lights. In practice I doubt mr average policeman would know this so I will pop one on for my own safety.

Now I just need a stand (temporary, probably) unless I can just use a length of pole or something.

No it wouldn't. The daytime MOT fiddle depends on the rear position lamp not being fitted, not the brake light.

hmm, interesting.
My track bike has a V5 and shortly will have road legal tyres however it doesnt have any lights. could be interesting, would certainly be handy to be able to test ride it on a decent ride to clear it out before getting to the track and finding out it isnt running right!
Will it matter that the speedo is disconnected and covered up? and the bike has no stand....

For the MOT no, but you must have a speedo on the road.

There are plenty of things that you will not fail the MOT on but which could result in you being done on the road (eg, faulty ABS brakes on a bike are an advisory, yet the police could probably do you for "Using a vehicle with defective brakes").

All the best

also, if u have the switch gears for indicators lights etc, u must have them on your bike.

I got my old 7r thru with just the horn, numberplate, reflector and speedo.

Did put a brake light on afterwards after complaints from my mates. Laughing

There is a garage in Peterborough that will do it with just a horn when I asked (as long as it actually MOT worthy!). I can provide details for anyone who wants it, he is very reasonable!
