Was coming home from work and decided to go down the dual carriageway as the other way was congested, only had 500m or so of it, spotted a scooter in my mirrors then lost it, not seeing it go by i looked harder and when i looked forward again the car in front was braking.... I was hard on the brakes until i hit his rear left side, rear wheel locked at some point (think more than once) and i fell to my left. first thing i did was drag my bike to the side and pick up a piece of plastic which broke off (lol). then proceeded to gather myself by the crash barrier.

the fairing around the left headlight is a bit cracked and the bit which braces under the light and holds it in snapped in half (the bit i picked up) so the headlight unit is loose. The gear lever was bent in and wouldnt move but i pulled that back into shape. Also the rear brake seems crap now, dunno whats happened there. Minimal damage in all honesty, could have been worse.

luckily the people carrier/4x4 type car I hit turns out was unscathed apart from my paint blotching the bumper... so creds to the guy I hit for not taking it to insurance.

thanks to the other biker who stopped to see if i was ok Thumbs Up

Unlucky pal, at least you got minimal damage, and got a touch with the person you hit, are you hurt? Any reason you were fixated on the scooter behind by the way??

Unlucky, but you do appear to have got off pretty lightly.
There's an important lesson to be learnt here: what's going on in front is generally more important than what's going on behind.
Thumbs Up

Bad luck chap, but chalk one up for experience. Thumbs Up Main thing is nobody was badly hurt. One of the things I used to do a lot was fixate on my mirrors too much, but I learned from my instructor that it's much more important to know what's going on in front. That's not to say you should become less observant, just prioritise where your attention is focused.

For normal riding. check your mirrors every 15-20 seconds or so and just literally glance to see that all is well behind, then adjust you speed if someone is up your arse etc. Scan the road in front, literally building a 'wide' overall picture, rather than focusing too much on one object or hazard. Takes a lot of practice and I'm still perfecting/getting used to it.

I'm currently reading the Motorcycle Roadcraft book (the one the police use) and, so far I completely agree with the reviews - it's the best tenner you'll ever spend. I feel it's improving my riding, and I'm learning loads for it. It's made me change my attitude to become very self-evaluating when I have a near miss or do something I shouldn't. It's teaching me to learn from my mistakes and find out why they happen. I don't think I'll ever stop learning! Awesome stuff.

Sorry to hear about the crash, but glad you're ok!

You could probably half that price if you searched Ebay for spare parts.

I fixate on my mirrors because I'm paranoid about police cars catching me 10mp over the north cirular's 50mph limit - cue rant about spped enforcement being more dangerous etc

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.
