my bandit 600 takes ages to warm up i look it in a garage with 2 covers on so it is sheltered from the cold, when i start it up it takes ages for it to sit idleing fine. if i sat there for it to warm up id be there for hours so i ride it cautiusly until it warms up, it takes a good few miles for it to idle around the 1100rpm mark.

is this normal on carbed bikes?

It's better for the bike to just start it and ride off anyway. A bike doesn't get properly warm idling.

Aren't you using the choke? Some bikes need it more than others.

My old bandit 600 dident take very long to get warm, Often dident need choke to start it.

1100rpm sounds a bit low, could your idle speed be set to low? i seem to remember around 2k, but i could be wrong. As Ham says, start it up, ride off and take it easy for the first 5-10 mins, gradually decreasing the amount (if any) of choke you are using.

yeah i tend to agree, if mine idles around 1k its lumpy and prone to stall. i have mine around 1.5 closer to 2 and its ok. unless its something (else!) wrong with my bike...

1100rpm??
that sounds about right, if not high to me!

i've got the SRAD idling at about 8-900rpm with no problems.

Use the choke then, that's what it's there for. Wink

Hi

Owners handbook for the Bandit says to have the idle set to 1100~1300 rpm. So it is on the low side of OK.

Tended to find the Bandits warm up pretty quickly. When standard my 1200 would need the choke to start but would stall at the first proper junction from my house if the choke was still on (~300 yards).

All the best

Keith

I began typing this but I have a strange incling that bandits could be air cooled. But im not a big fan so I wouldent know.

IF it IS water cooled, make sure that your thermo hasnt jammed open, this would mean your cooling system was running full pelt constantly stopping it from warming properly Thumbs Up

Not really. Probably something minor. Could well be something simple like the carbs needing balancing, or valves adjusting.

The Bandit is oil / air cooled.

All the best

Keith

thanks keith - although our definitons of something simple vary wildly!

i need to give it a good general service - im toying with doing the valves as part of this (ive done it on my cg..)

balancing carbs i think i'll leave to a proffessional!

Hi

If you have vacuum gauges then balancing the carbs is a doddle. Far easier and quicker than doing the valves.

All the best

the 650 lump is water cooled, the older 600's are oil cooled. Thumbs Up

I never bothered warming my 400, started it, put lid and gloves on. Off i go, straight to the redline. Didnt have any problems. Probably not advisable though.

i dont, but i guess they arent expensive...i dunno sometimes its the thought of doing stuff that scares me more than the actual doing, but chatting on here often gives me confidence so you never know i'll prob do a thread about it in a month!
