How do i tighten the head bearings?

I know i would have to take the handlebars off.. but how do i tighen the bearing?

Cant find anything in search, im sure its a simple job! ta

Hi, you don`t have to take the handlebars off, the adjuster should be just beneath the top yoke - should have notches in it for a c-spanner. Make sure you know how tight it needs to be as some bikes (like my Er5) only need finger tightening. Here is a pic of mine - hopefully helps you identify it Thumbs Up

mine tightens clockwise (from above to the right) - should be same on yours

erm. do you like wasting your money on needless tools?

use a hammer and drift to knock the locking nut loose, then use it to tighten it as you want it, then drift the locking nut back.

C spanners...

As above loosen the locknut, tighten the lower nut until there is no detectable play in the headstock and no more, then tighten-up the locknut. To check if there is any play you put the bike on the centre-stand then get someone to sit on the rear to bring the front wheel off the ground. Now grab the forks and push/pull to feel for any looseness in the headstock. Now turn the bars slowly lock to lock to check there is no 'notchiness' in the steering (especially at dead ahead steering). If there is any, then the bearings need changing.

If you don't have a centrestand, you can put the bike on the sidestand with someone putting weight on the pillion then use a jack under the engine to lift the front wheel.

Mind you, depends on what bike it is.

You have to remove the handlebars and the top yoke on my VFR750 to get at the nut. It has a tabbed lock washer that needs straightening then re-bending afterwards in addition to the two nuts.
