'bout 5 years back I had an operation after I fucked up the tendons in left hand. Works ok now, but some repetitive movements can cause discomfort. Unluckily for me, operating the clutch on my bike is one of them.

So I was wondering what factors affect the stiffness of the clutch? Because I reckon if it was smoother, it would put less strain on my hand (index finger to be precise).

The clutch on the bandit is well harsh. Harsher than some other bikes i've felt. Is it the springs inside the clutch doing it or what? Or the design of the lever? Is there such thing as a hydraulic clutch? And any (easy) way to make modifications on a bike to make it easier on the hand?

Thinking about changing my bike soon so i'll definitely look at any suggestions when I get it.

Speak to NABd. they should have some ideas for weakening the clutch without damaging it.

Otherwise the first thing that occurs is do away with the clutch all together and fit a kliktronic unit

there are hydraulic clutches, a ZXR750 for example, as well as a KTM superduke has them.

you can also get easy-pull levers to take some of the strain off.

you can (but maybe not advised) get weaker clutch springs, and check that the cable is very well lubricated.

Yeah, a well lubed cable will make the most difference. Get lots of 3-in-1 down the cable. Or some teflon stuff if you're posh.

Theres still quite a tension behind the lever and can make the fingers ache if in slow moving traffic, but on the ZXR you can adjust the position of the biting point to suit finger span to elevate most pains.

What about one of those clutch changing thingymebobs that some disabled bikers have that work by a push button to change gears.

yes, but a smaller master cylinder and wider lever movement will make it easier to pull.

Fuck that autochange thing. Then I have to admit ive got a disabled hand!

Will deffo try the lube idea. What I think would help is a similar adjustment that the brake lever has, where you can adjust the span. Becuase its the constant reaching right out and pulling all the way in that fucks it up. If it was closer to the bar (i.e. had a shorter range between in>out) that would make it easier.

Plus ive got small hands which doesnt help. I almost have to get my hand into a hyper-extended (bending fingers back up) position to reach the lever. And its this repeated stretching that causes the problem.

Junk the idea of a hydraulic clutch mate ...in my experience of them are basically an SP2 and a ZXR750 (RSV?) ...you get arms like pop eye the sailor after 5 minutes in traffic. MUCH MUCH stiffer than cable jobbies...

The hydraulic clutch on my RST was brutal at first, I did the Plymouth megaride not long after I switched over from the ZZR. Creeping out of Lee Mill was agonising by the time I hit the gates, I don't think I've ever been so pleased to be on the A38 Wink

It's not so bad now I'm used to it, but it still feels way heavier than any other of the (admittedly limited) selection of bikes I've played around with.
