Hi, been reading various posts for a while now, which made me get an old honda to rebuild my self. Its taken six months to get this far. Parts are real hard to get. Thank god for ebay..lol..Just a post to say HI! and let you all see my efforts. Nice bikes you lot have as well. I live in the south wests of the UK. Here is the bike. Its a 1976 Honda CB125S/J. The bike was in a field lying on its side for about 5 years. It was abused by a 16 year old before this. I have no other history of the bike, i do know it was local to me from new.

The engine was totally rebuilt. The frame electrics ...every thing was overhauled. New bits where needed,

Regards

Just to get small things like the main stand spring and rewire the front end. Add some oil and fuel and see if it starts.

Wonder what the bike is worth now.

Thats a great job you've done on that. I'm a fan of the 70's 125S's and have rebuilt a few. Did you respoke the wheels yourself? - if so was it difficult?

thanks for the post chaps, the spokes where taken out and cleaned, Lots of manual sanding. was going to get them zinc coated, but a decent alloy paint done them justice. Maybe in the future the zinc-ing will be done.

Every part was stripped, cleaned, rust treated and then repainted, i must of went through 7 wire brushes that fit on my drill. Lots of hours taken all the paint/rust off back to bare metal. Lucky for me, only the mudguards where rotten out. The frame was brill.

The engine took ages. The clutch was replaced with EBC parts. The gears, crank case was stripped cleaned. There was more water than oil when i first drained it out..lol The bore was fine but the piston rings where stuck. A good soaking in liquid spanner and a very small dremmel wire brush free`ed them up nice. Got a Gasket kit with seals and rebuilt the engine. Lapped the valves in and now have awsome compression. Points advance retard mech rebuilt also.

I did buy a few newer parts. But spent around 100 quid. Cheap bike me thinks. and have lots of fun with it.

And i did all this without a hyanes manual. The bike is that simple.

Sure i will ride the Jaffa project, it deserves a new life. For a 31 year bike, hopefully live on for a while yet.

Would love to do somthin a little bigger, but i can only drive 125cc so i might just go and take that dreaded test. probally on the honda too. Thanks for the input guys.

I take my hat off to you sir!

When I saw the first few pics I thought it was a "This is my new project I'll keep you posted" kind of thing.

And I was thinking, yeah right, that's a non-starter, it's fucked.

Well done to you, seriously you've done a very very good job.

thanks for the brill comments chaps. Nice to see so many saying i have done a good job. Like to do somthing bigger in the future, maybe an older classic perhaps.

Whilst it is raining, the bike is getting sorted indoors. The wiring is now 100% done. New bulbs, battery. Got to find a main stand spring, tried a washing machine spring, but it was too weak and it stretched.. Also i need a clamp for the exhaust that holds tight to the front pipe. The 6V ticker tocker relay has had it too so... back to the bike breaker too see what i can find. Next is the tank, to be flushed out the tap added. when i get better weather see if i can start the engine. Love to know what it sounds like.

Any how thanks for the comments, when i get nicer weather will put up some final pics of it running. Then off to the MOT station.

Hi again

Davidsilver has the main stand return spring for £1.35, chances are they could help you with the exhaust clamp. I cant recommend them highly enough, cheaper than a main honda dealer though you do need to add VAT and postage to their prices, dont be afraid to pick their brains. They also do a genuine indicator relay for £25 but personally I'd get one elsewhere,

www.davidsilver.co.uk

this place does 6v relays for between 3 and 7 pounds, havent used then though
https://motorcycleproducts.co.uk/

When it comes to starting there might be problems, the rubber disc in the petrol tap might be hardened which can make the tap leak out the side, there is only one good position for the connection to the points, between the insulating washers, anywhere else = no spark and a very hot coil.

To set up the valve timing you line up the T mark on the flywheel with the mark, then with the points plate/auto advance/ and mounting plate removed line up the 'o' stamped on the cam gear with the notch/triangle on the cylinder head (its about 11 or 12 o'clock)

Points gap is 0.3mm

Tappets 0.05mm

Plug gap 0.7mm

You've probably already done all that but as you said you had no manual theres no harm in having a reference.

Have fun

I've used them, decent service, and very competitive prices. I got a clutch cable for £11.95, an OE cable was closer to £60.

Chheeerz WavyGravy for the usefull info. I got the valve timing sused with out the book, simple design. The other bits are a nice reference, thanks.. will be getting the feeder guages out morra for a final stup.

Thanks for all that have posted, makes my heart warm.

Just for an update. when i added fuel to the tank, switch on the tap, applied the choke, two kicks and she fired up. testiment to honda engines that.. I had to set up the tick over and fuel mixture on the carb and its running sweet. The tappets need slight adjustment tho. Been riding the bike up and down the drive. How fun.. cant wait now for an MOT..

Cheeeerz guys!
