If you're worried about appearing girly then it's not the car for you. People *will* make hairdresser jokes.
If you don't give a shit about what people think, preferring to sit back with the smug satisfaction that no matter how camp you may look, you know you're having more fun than most of the other people on the road, then they're excellent cars.
I had a mk1 and now have a mk3 so clearly I think they're the dogs bollocks. |

Depends what model you go for aswell....
I had a 1.8 mrk 1 the one with the pop up lights, also had chrome roll over bars (style bars),nice front grill, chrome everywhere in the car and a stainless steel twin up-swept exhaust made for it. Looked really nice, but did have plenty of "girly and hairdresser" comments though, but balls to them...... it was a cracking car top up or down in sun or winter !
1.6 might be cheaper to insure, and might be easier on the old petrol.
1.4 is too under powered for my liking.
As for the mk2,mrk2.5 and the new ranges im not 100% keen on them personally i prefer them with the pop up lights. (same with the MR2's)
Insurance... i had my mrk1 when i was your age 5 years ago roughly and the first year it cost me £550.... the second it dropped to under £500.
Plenty of places out there do parts and modifing for them too.

owners club
https://www.mx5oc.co.uk/
uk cars are usally cheaper to insure but have less extras.
imports (miata's and eunos) do usually have better spec's.
Find out what limited editions there are aswell, as the use to make loads with all different spec... different interior, colours etc...
Engines are "bullet proof" , cambelt change will cost about £350-£400 depending on year and engine size, so make sure that the previous owner has done this along with a clutch change to save you a bit of cash in the long term.
Check the roof for holes, leaks etc... check for damp patches in the foot wells and check the rubber seals on the roof aswell.
Cracking cars...... get one !
(if i didnt have a dog i'd get another one straight away.... And the fact i now like having over 200bhp on tap ) ____________________ Ducati 916,white framed corse replica https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=239309

MX5s are great. They're only girly if you're a girl, and when you're driving one you won't give a toss if people think you're a hairdresser.
I've driven two - a Mk3, which was fun and remarkably refined, compared to the Mk1 I drove, which was race prepared, had a roll cage, no power steering, racing seats, about 20bhp more than standard and was on slick tyres, in the wet. Didn't feel too girly driving that. ____________________ TARMAC - Automotive blog *UPDATED 26/3/09 - Abandoned fuel stations to go electric? ~ Buy my eBay stuff!

Shouldn't have a problem getting insured on an older MX5 at 24, even as a first car, will probably be paying near a grand though if it's a first car with no NCB.
I personally think they're very girly and would never buy one, the new ones look a bit better. I had a quick fly around a track in the new one lastyear back to back with an RX8 and the MX5 was far more fun and handled way better, so as long as you don't mind looking like a poof, go for it. |

you shouldnt have any problems transfering your bike NCB if you arent planning on running a bike at the same time. its only certain car companies that dont handle bike ncb nowadays from what ive seen ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

The mk3 is positively butch compared to the mk1/2/2.5 - you don't realise how much chunkier it is til you park them next to each other. It's the buff gay guy who goes down the gym a lot and works on his 'guns'.
The mk1 is still the best looking one though. You simply don't get any cooler than popup headlights. |

Hate to stereotype, but.......my ex's brother drives one - he's gay and a hairdresser!
I reckon you should drive whatever you enjoy and stuff what everyone else thinks - it's your money and your ride, but you did ask ____________________ 'The core of a man's spirit comes from new experiences'
