I heard from a guy at work the other day that any maintenance work/ repairs on a car/bike will need to be carried out by a qualified mechanic in the not too distant future. I've heard of similar things in the past - does anyone know if there is any truth in this? If so, that's pants... I know for a fact that I can do a much better job than some of the monkeys out there...

i doubt it. I think it's more to do with warranties, disposing of oils + hazardous waste.

They can't stop you from working on your own car really but if companies turn around and offer a 7 year warranty and you got the tesco clubcard vouchers for servicing it's hardly worth it.

That will never come into action. What happens if you own a really old bike or car and no one will touch it? It's just got to be left to rot? I don't think so.

Would like to see them try and stop me working on my own bike.

Same was said for doing electrical stuff in your own house.

In fact rules came in a few years ago.

Ignored.

Since when has it been illegal to fix a vehicle at the roadside? If that's the case, then every single breakdown service is illegal too.

It's been illegal to perform maintenance on the roadside for years, while doing so your vehicle is deemed to not be road worthy by your actions iirc.

Emergency repairs are just that, an emergency.

I was asked about this years ago by an officer as I was hot wiring a customers bike after they lost their key, pointed out what I was doing and the officer said 'ah, emergency repair. Carry on sir'.

Repairing vehicles on the roadside is probably going to fall foul of some elf n sayf-tee regulation in that you are possibly endangering yourself and others. It may also be subject to some petty council by-law, this could certainly apply to tenants as their tenancy can often have some pretty draconian restrictions.
If the government do try and make it illegal I'd like to think we'd all resist this but in reality, if you change your brake pads 'illegally' and then you are involved in an accident even where your brakes were not at fault, how quickly do you imagine that the insurance company would use this as an excuse to avoid payout?

I really hope that it isn't true. I've repaired cars outside my house numerous times, although having lived in cul-de-sacs it doesn't really bother anyone.

Nowadays it does seem that everybody needs a 'certificate' to do anything which is a shame.

From the few occasions when I've had my cars worked on by others, the standard of work & knowledge of some main dealer 'technicians' leaves a lot to be desired and it's satisfying to do it yourself for free.

To be fair they can't enforce it anyway.......not without x-ray specs that can see through garage doors.

If they bring this law in, then I'm going to break it. It's as simple as that.

This is uk we're talkin about yeah?

It's becomming a fucking joke here, really is. Talk about nanny state.

Illegal to do any electrics in your own home unless fully qualified.
Councils using sat imaging to see illegal extensions and buildings on your property.
Road tax/insurance/mot databases
tv license all on the database's and the TV guy knocking on your door wanting to talk about his van outside.
ID cards!!
Compulsory DNA tests if arrested wether you're found guilty or just wrongful arrest.
Possible compulsory DNA tests for everyone, ANYWAY!

There's alot more, I just don't want to start sounding like the dailymail....

Like I'm going to let some incompetant nicompoop fitter at a motorbike shop go near my bike with anything more complex than a chamois leather.

On five occasions I paid a motorbike shop £250 to service my bike which was under warranty. They were meant to have done an oil and filter change, coolant change, set the tappets, clean the air filter, change the plug and renew the fork oil. About two hours work which for some reason meant they had to have the bike all day.

I was provided with a signed tick-sheet to that effect.

I later found convincing evidence that the coolant, tappets, fork oil, plugs and air filter were not done and had in fact never been touched since I bought the bike two years previously. I only hope the oil was done!

Hi

There has been talk of it, and it wouldn't surprise me if it is pushed into being.

Believe in Austria you can't do the work yourself, and oil is only sold in small (and expensive) half litre containers for topping up the oil.

There may be issues with independent servicing of cars soon:-

https://www.r2rc.co.uk

Changes to the block exemption taking effect in 2010 could allow makers to restrict the supply of technical info to their own dealer network, stopping cheaper independents from being able to carry out many service functions.

All the best

Keith

Exactly! I do all work on all my bikes and cars and always will. I'd like to know how they plan to stop me working on them in my own garage on my own property with my own tools!?

It's not going to happen!

Wink Thumbs Up
