There will probably be an option in the BIOS to switch between onboard graphics or dedicated card.
I presume on a Compaq that you would hammer F10 on start up to get into the BIOS then have a look around. (May not be F10)

yeah disable the onboard card in the bios and make sure the cable is plugged into the new one.
some Pc's know which card a cable is plugged into.
does it how up in device manager or prompt for new drivers?
