I personally only do it on request.

True, but Nature is also ingenious and will start exercising population control in one form or another if a species starts to multiply too much. Usually it's in the form of predation, but as humans we're beyond that, so it has to find another way.
It's a well-known fact, for instance, that in crowded cities there are more gay people than in the countryside. More gays, less babies.
