Is there any reason as to why you have to pass through these towns? , I generally used the hey that route looks interesting and went down it in the general direction of my destinations.

Its not specific, its thats the general direction we wanted to head. What Im really asking is, is there anything along those routes we should try to see, or just is that a good direction to head in

Your route misses some great roads,

Namely the N202 north of Nice

the N85 between grenoble and Grasse

Also the N260 Andorra run

Any other roads not too far off my current route I should aim to head down. The whole thing is pretty flexible as to where and when so all suggestions welcome Smile

Looks like you're missing out the best parts of France by going down the West there. It's great for drinking wine, not so much for riding.

Do you really want to retrace the route in Italy? When I went to Rome we headed across to San Marino through the middle, it was very good riding.

Overall looks an ok route though.

What would you recommend? We still want to head into spain for a few days so ideally a direction that would lead us there.

Maybe come down the middle through the Central Massif region, then head through South East France into the Pyrennes.

You could also go over the famous Millau bridge that way, if you're interested in it.

If you've got 114 days to tour Europe, why not go to Eastern Europe, too, esp Croatia?

Or, as it's summer, head up to Scandi to see the nightless nights (the sun doesn't set at all in the summer).

She's got a very good point, it's a small loop considering the time, it could be done reasonably comfortably in 25 days. You could do a full-on North to South cape jobbie in that time, that would be an ace tour.

I presume because he has the GF on the back, which limits distance he can do per day,

While single folk and solo tourists can cram in 1000s of miles in days the ones on the back won't be very appreciative. BMW man took his wife last time he did a tour of Spain just like me took him 35 days due to the constant need to stop for female pillion.

From what I can see your riding a 50? (your signature)
That could be a problem, I want to do Lands End to John Oh Goats ( Laughing ) And I ride a 125. So I'm not going to bother until I ride a nice 500/600, with passengers you'll need the power to make up time and such.

I'm going to advise a radio kit, so you can talk to her over the noise of the road and the bike etc, in case she needs a pee or other anoying girlfriend issues on the back of the bike =P

Also how about stopping overnight to have a nice rest, or spend two nights and spend a day in certain towns? I'm sure your passenger will appreciate days off the bike.

Have you also considered how to transport clothes and things?

I think he posted about 4 months ago asking which bigger bike should I get for this trip , and the concensus was either a bandit , a VFR , or an transalp/varadero or the mighty africa twin....

But pillions have added problems in that the added weight kills MPG , which means your 20 litre ish tank or 26 litre on the AT only gives 3/4 to 2/3 of the range..

Having done it mostly at a pace that a 125 could handle (following paramotors), I'd say doing it on a 125 should be fine if you don't mind taking in some scenery and planning a reasonable amount of time etc.

Though, not sure I'd choose a Lifan as that 125 Confused.

Good points on time out for the OP; was just what I was thinking looking through the long list. I'd be wanting to spend some time out of the saddle, enjoying the countries I'm visiting. While the shorter days will leave a decent amount of time, I suspect it'd be nice to come back to the same place and not worry about packing up, etc.

Even though your trip has been delayed, when I went down to Spain I took the western coast and I must say the roads are pretty crap. The roads don't become interesting until you leave Pau so try to get down there by not heading west.

The N260 is essential as are the roads around Nice [the D6 etc] and it's a very nice place so may be worth scheduling a few days rest there. Head to Gap or Grenoble, they are the access points to the Alps and you would do well not to find a good road.

One further point, I noticed you have a few days planned that are over 200 miles. When I planned my trip I figured that 200 miles wasn't that far [average 50-60mph= 4 hours of riding] but in reality it is a lot further. As you will be with a pillion I would seriously reconsider any long mileage days... Very Happy Thumbs Up

That's planning ahead.... why plan a route over 2.5years before you even plan on going? As others said your initial route looks odd, it's just straight lines to destinations of no obvious interest, the best way it to pick a general direction and travel towards it via the most interesting looking roads you can, if they don't take you where you planned you go where they do. Taking the same route in and out of Italy would be a bit of a waste, and you're virtually just passing straight through the alps rather than travelling along through them into Austria which would be much better IMO.

I'm looking at the possibility of taking a month of work nextyear and in that time I would hope to get to spain, top half of Italy, maybe Greece, Romania, upto Estonia, Finland and back down through Norway. Plenty of time.

I'm sure I said somewhere above that the place to place isnt where were going I did that to work out the rough milage. The map was more or less the route plan. Which will still prolly be changed.
