Good idea to avoid the practice amp, I think you'd very quickly get frustrated about not being able to get a good sound, clean or distorted, out of one, whereas with an effects processor you'll get a real good sound, albeit through the headphones, but you can save up money in the mean time for that big marshall stack
As for which guitar, they'll prob be more or less the same at that price range so why not go for an Ibanez (well, I would).

Played a cheap Ibanez years ago, worst guitar I'd ever laid hands on. But it was about 15 years ago though. Squires play a lot better imo. |

As said, avoid Argos!!
Epiphone les pauls/sg's are very good for the money, new i think you can pick one up for about £300, second hand probably about £200.
You could always upgrade the pick ups after if you want better sounds.
Yamaha Pacifica's are also good though, ive played a couple and they felt a lot better than Fender Squires. |

Yamaha have a nasty habit of making decent guitars at reasonable prices that take an absolute pounding.
I have had my Yamaha RBX260 Bass for over 10 years now and it's still blummen luvverly. ____________________ Dark Lord Of Custard

Phwoar, guitar made from firewood, nice. Bet it sounds just as good as any of those fancy expensive ones. ____________________ Go back to bed - You have no rights - "Streetfighters ~ Mainstream motorcycling's crackwhore sister." |

Those fancy electric ones don't plug into my laptop and drive Reason via MIDI too good though, without forking out £££ ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

People slate Vintage, but I have a 6 string and a bass (heavily modded) by them, and I can't fault 'em. ____________________ Don't practice it until you get it right, practice it until you don't get it wrong.

Yamaha, Squier or Epiphone - you won't go wrong with any of their guitars and you'd probably not really outgrow them much. Park also make nice little amps under license from Marshall. ____________________ CBT February 2008 | A2 June 2008 | Yamaha YBR125 (written off) | Honda CBF125 (current) |
