I want to build a reasonably quick 500cc Single for 1/4 mile drag and sprint. I prefer methanol to petrol as it is far easier to tune to so decided on a 500 Jawa Speedway motor running through a Norton 4 speed box in a custom frame. I hope to keep this as a record of the build ( I estimate about 8 months so it will not be a continual narrative). Tonight I laid the motor and box into dummy engine plates to see how it looks, there needs to be a touch of tweaking but I hope to have some dural plates made up in the next few weeks. Tomorrow I will start to do a full size layout.

I have done a bit on her today.
The MDF engine plates needed tweaking a little as the motor was over inclined and the gearbox too far back. I am now a little happier with the set up and will go Dural shopping on Monday and will try to record the noise it makes so people can fap. The first real job is done, I paid £215 for a Norton box with a three spring clutch. This was very cheap for a couple of reasons, It was collect only and rather grubby as it had been used for grasstrack. A strip down and all seems ok but the clutch was seized with rust so I have reconditioned it and fitted new cush rubbers. The box has been cleaned and needs to get some TIG welding to repair machining undertaken by the previous owner on the mount area. I also did a little work on the box itself, I will not be able to kick over an engine at such a high compression ratio so I put the KS shaft in the lathe and using my angle grinder removed the splines ( in the Norton gear box you need to retain the KS shaft as it is hollow and acts as the bearing for the mainshaft) I need to turn a small cover to press in and tidy up the job. I also filed off the gear indicator as it will be just where the gear change link will be.
As for cost..... About £2.5K.

Sweet project. What lathe you got Wali? A friend of mine just sold a sweet SB heavy ten for £300. Bargain of the year for the buyer. Hope you cleaned up that machine well after using the grinder over the bed.

I don't know what the particular requirements are for that style of sprinter but the superstreet boys put all their effort into reducing the swingarm pivot to front axle distance and increasing the length of the arm, so they get maximum front weight bias withing their 68" wheelbase. Headstock tube shortened to get the CoG lower and as many heavy items up the front as they can.

I do not own a lathe but rather have two at school. both Boxford Students. This machine will be designated as "Racing 500" and as such most things will be allowed, turbo, blower, NO2, Nitro etc. It will not have read suspension.

Tradition and ease of construction mate, the mass will be considerably reduced when I make them from Dural.
This is a rather radical and record breaking bike using a 500 laydown.
