 |
|
Ok, just an idea I was wondering about.
With winter setting in and me being too tight to buy heated grips I like to ride with my hands (one at a time obviously) on my lovely and warm cylinder head. This is fine for the clutch hand but as yet I haven't been able to master controlling the throttle with my clutch hand so I was wondering if I had the choke on whilst my throttle hand was warming up on the head would it cause any damage at all, short term/long term etc?
I wouldn't actually be using the throttle while the choke was on as my hand would be on the head warming up and after I'd put my hand back on the bars I'd knock the choke off.
Thanks in advance ____________________ Now: '00 Kawasaki ZRX1100R - Past: '84 Yamaha DT125, '89 Kawasaki KLR600, '97 Yamaha XJ600N

Don't do it, the rich mixture will wash the bores of oil, which could potentially cause engine damage.

Would probably start to foul your plug after extended choke-age. Obviously it would use more fuel too. Might coke up your exhaust a bit. Couple of things I suppose. To be honest I'd rather have cold hands than ride with the choke on. ____________________ Current bike: VTR1000F Firestorm. Eeep! Ok I'll skip that then!
Is there anything else I could try that's simple? Maybe putting an elastic band between the grip and throttle body? Seems to be asking for trouble that though...
I don't get many traffic lights on my commute which is the only other time I can put my throttle hand on the head. ____________________ Now: '00 Kawasaki ZRX1100R - Past: '84 Yamaha DT125, '89 Kawasaki KLR600, '97 Yamaha XJ600N

as said. on no account ride with the choke on. it will wash oil from the bores.
a little truth from about 20 years ago::::
a woman of about 60 brought herself a brand new VW Polo, she drove off all delighted with her new car. 3 weeks later she took it back for a service and the mechanics noticed it was smoking a lot.
the engine was diagnosed as completely worn out so a new one was fitted.
a few weeks after that she went into the VW dealership with complaints that the car was smoking too much.
the mechanic went to check it and saw that she was using the choke knob to hang her handbag from.
that is a true story ____________________ ZX636C6F road. ZX636C1H track. ZX7R redundant. ZX0.5R minimoto as ornament.

Unfortunately mine has a dodgy Kawasaki choke that needs to be on while riding for the bike to warm up properly.
I've warmed it up for 10 minutes before and it still stalled when I took the choke off |

An elastic band is too weak, you need to use a loop (make it oval shaped, its easier to control then) of metal coat-hanger wire.
Works fine for everyone i know who does it.
Or alternatively you could just move the rubber grip so far up the tube that it rubs on the switchgear and doesn't automatically roll off.
Cheers

I constantly cancel my indicators too, and check my seat hump as it decided to make a bid for freedom on the M8 one night.

If you can be bothered, relocate the idle adjuster to somewhere near your handlebars, then you can crank it up for cruise control when required.
Whacking the idle up is just the same as opening the throttle, unlike the choke which enrichens the mixture disproportionately.
Or buy an Aprilia RSV, it has an idle adjuster on the left handlebar, goes all the way up to about 4k ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |

You could go for one of these.

Although heated grips would be cheaper. ____________________ If you dont like the way that I ride.......Stop trying to keep up!!! |
