Split Link Chain installation - help?

Okay well, i've got a chain which came in 4 parts.

It's just got to get me to and through an MOT and then im getting a proper chain for it anyway.

So, how do i install a split link chain?

I have:
the chain itself
A half link (Link plate with two pins installed)
A link plate (Making up a whole link with the above piece)
2x clips (Of which one is thicker than the other)

And suggestions on how i install the link?

Also which direction should the open end of the clips be facing when rotating? into the direction of travel or away from?

The open ends point away from the direction of rotation ( at the top of the run they point to the rear wheel.
As for the other bits, use what you need for the shortest run.
