Why would a car on say an 'M' plate be re-registered to a different 'M' reg plate?

Change of body?

Is this what happens when you register a private plate and then return to a normal plate after a while?

Quite stumped by this one.

Either as you've said yourself it's had a private plate on previously or a previous owners taken the original plate off to be used on another vehicle as a private plate.

When my last car had it's private plated removed it reverted back to it's original reg. Not sure whether that's always the case.

Whenever I've taken my private reg off a car, it has always gone back to the original plate.

My friend took his off, and it was assigned a whole new reg. I suppose the DVLA had probably sold the original one.

I bought my car a few months ago and went to subaru for some parts, gave them the number plate and they had no record of this car.
Gave them the vin number and it was originally registered to another "R" plate...... turns out one of the original owners liked the plate so much he retained it and put it on his RB5, thus leaving me with a new plate created by the dvla.
Pain in the arse as the original plate was R333....... 333 being the limited edition numbers of the car !
