hi there.

forgive my ignorance on this subject, i'm more familiar with engines than frame issues.

to give this post a little context, take a peek at this ebay ad, after reading my problem.

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270303984604&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:GB:1123

so here we go. i'm in the market for a Virago 535, preferably after '94 model.

i like the setup of the bike, but i'd really love to give it a bit of something extra by adding some sports bike style wheels and tyres to the rear and front. is this kind of thing doable? how much wider or thinner is an average sports wheel when compared to the standard virago spoked wheels?

how awkward will the forks be, if i'm fitting a potentially wider wheel? will i need entirely new forks?

but most of all, i guess.... i'm looking for some info from someone who's done a similar conversion (similar to the bike in the ebay ad).

any info would help. thanks!

Ben

Virago is a shaft drive, so that's going to be a right git.

You could always get the wheels re-laced with wider rims.

bugger! i'd forgotten about that!

well.... let's roll with the concept anyway, even if it has potential problems.

that's what i want, really... a list of all potential problems and potential fixes!

lets get to the grit of the matter.

sorting discs and calipers could be a bit of a problem, although most of that can be overcome with mixing/matching and billet caliper hangers, then there's wheel spindles/spacers which may require access to a lathe and the knowledge to use it...

then you may find the wheel too wide to use with the original yokes which will possibly require custom billet yokes to be machined and your post pressed in or a new one to suit made (that is assuming you're going to use the original fork legs)

anything can be mixed and matched if you have the engineering talent or enough money to throw at it.....

do a little googling for Twizzle if you want to see some off the wall bike/trike creations, throw him a pile of parts and give him a rough idea of what you want and see what he can come up with

Problem with the original Virago is that the wheel/tyre size is imperial, like on the Harleys.

Suggest you trawl the owners club for specific info as if/when it's been done that's where the details will be.

It might be possible to fit the back wheel off an XJ pre-Diversion, or import Seca/Maxim 650/750 like mine. Not exactly a sports bike wheel but a possible compromise. The back tyre on mine is giant.

XJ Diversions are a complete redesign of the pre-Divvy and parts are generally not swappable, I can't see the wheels fitting on a Virago, although it's also worth looking into.

If they're spoked wheels, then supermoto rums on original hubs would make sense.
