Noticed a couple of times that my clutch has slipped over the last couple of weeks, the oil looks like it could do with a change, would this sort it?

Oh and I recently topped up the oil as it looked a bit low, but I may have put a little too much in, could this be the casue of the problem Embarassed

ZX6R F3 BTW.

Hi

Possible but unlikely an oil change will fix it (but no harm trying). And slightly too much oil should not have an effect on the clutch slipping.

Likely to be new plates time, but normally bike clutch plates are fairly easy to do (not sure about the ZX6R, never done the clutch on one).

All the best

Keith

Could just be that the cable needs adjusting to check that the cable's adjusted correctly, but other than that it looks like new plates time.

On some bikes you don't even need to drop the oil to change the clutch.

New clutch plates?? Bugger! Shocked

The bikes done just under 13,000 miles, so if the plates need changing what does that tell me? Is this normal wear or is it a sign the bike has been thrashed/neglected?

Thanks
Nick

Hi

Plates are generally pretty easy. Half the time easier than changing brake pads.

That is a pretty low for the life of plates in road use, but pretty easy to kill them from slipping the clutch (ie, fast getaways).

All the best

Keith

Ok, thanks Keith and Big_Ham Thumbs Up

So if I need to change the clutch plates, is there any specific type that would be better to go for? Would it be worth/neccessary changing the springs too?

What else would I need - Clutch cover gasket etc?

Think it was a bit over 9000 miles for my ZX-J model - but definitely had plenty of quick clutch-slipping starts.

They redesigned the engine for G/J/A etc models, however it was very easy to do - could do it in under half an hour when you know what you're doing, probably!

Hi

On a stock (or close to stock) bike I would avoid using HD springs unless you really need to (heavy clutch is a pain). There should be some specs for the free lengths of the stock springs in the manual, but personally I would doubt that they are worn out in such a low mileage.

Clutch cover gasket should be replaced. Tend to be cheap, but quite often people get away without changing them.

Many people advise sticking with OE clutch plates. That is up to you, but I have used others without problems.

All the best

Keith

I'll have to get my specs on and follow the Haynes manual for this I think, never done this before - should be interesting Laughing
