Hi All,
Not the best mechanic/bike mechanic by any means however got a small problem and after a bit of advice.
Was cleaning the bike today and went to turn it on to make sure it starts normally etc and move it so I could give it a rinse.
On the dash there is an 'FI' light for the fuel injection, this normally just comes on then goes off once its done it checks. Instead however it flashed 3 times for about a second followed by 5 short flashes. I thought that might be a diag code so noted it, also, I noticed the amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust was much more than usual however it automatically started to reduce via the automatic choke, the engine sounded and normal.
After looking in the service manual, the diag code refers back to an EGCV (Exhaust Gas Control Valve). This seems to be a little motor under the exhaust (can see it and connections all look clean and ok) that operates a valve in the exhaust itself limiting how much gas can come out at once.
It looks like the motor/servo has died (I bought the bike from new in September 07) so could be a Honda job however main question is do you think it'd be ok to ride short distances with this/do you think it'll affect the operation of the bike.
Its still running a stock exhaust and as I understand it, when you replace the exhaust on this bike, you need a computer chip that replaces this motor and just feeds info back to the ECU to keep it happy, just wondering how critical it is to the operation of the bike. Would this affect back pressure (again, not entirely sure) or cause other issues?
Any advice/comments appreciated, ideally wanted to use it for work this week but wont if its a major issue.
Regards

Could be, as i've not been on it for a bit - however of all the time I've had it, its had worse nights in the rain and started with no FI issues which has worried me a little.
Cheers for the advise, prob worth getting it to the Honda shop, luckily its only about 3 miles from me at most ____________________ Current Bikes: Honda CBR 600RR - '07, Suzuki GSX1250 FA ST '11

It won't hurt the bike to ride it with a seized valve/broken servo no. It may feel less powerful, but that's it. ____________________ My Flickr |

Was reading an article in Bike today, that was saying about buying a second hand 954. One of the things it mentions is the servo operated Exhaust valve. It says that the cable that operates them is very prone to corrosion, and eventually it can jam the servo motor. So might want to take a look see if it's rusted to buggery. Might be able to just clean it up. ____________________

Funnily enough I had this problem happen on my car, the valve mechanism had jammed open and someone had stuck a piece of tin across the opening so there was no power loss. I stuck a new piece of tin across and ordered a replacement part, it's fine now.
The principle behind this valve is to allow exhaust gases to be re-burnt leading to theoretically cleaner emissions. The valve is set to open at an rpm limit (3k on the car) where this will have little or no effect on power (though of course it has some).
So if it is jammed open and you can't fix it, put a piece of tin plate across the opening and order a new one, mine was £100 from FIAT yours maybe cheaper. ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |

To be fair if it is the exhaust valve when you turn the ignition on you'll here and few whirrs and clicks.
If you flick the ignition on and look at the cables you should see it move as the ECU checks the valve. If it doesn't move it's gone. ____________________ My Flickr |
