Well went to get a new tire at the weekend for the R1 and I drove from my house to Guildford tires, which is about 8 miles, I was taking it real easy as I had next to no grip on the rear.

On route my rear kept slipping out, I managed to control it and adjust accordingly. So after about 4 - 5 rear slips I arrived at the tire place and parked up, ordered what I wanted and handed the chap my key.

So I do the usual thing, go up to the reception and get reading MCN or a bike mag when I hear my bike start and then 2 seconds later;

Mechanic: "Guy with the R1?"
Me: "Yeah"
Mechanic : "Can you come down a moment?"
Me: "Sure"

So I get down stairs to my utter shock;

Me: "Whats up?"
Mechanic: "You're missing something"
Me: "Huh?"
Mechanic: "Come look" (Pointing at my wheel)

Turns out my wheel nut and spacer was missing and I just rode 8 miles thinking my rear tire was slipping when in fact the wheel was moving. Shocked The spindle had tried to come out, but only got about 5mm to where it should have been. Phew!

I had a complete look of shock on my face, then me and the mechanic just looked at each other and laughed. He said he has never seen that happen before. Well neither had I.

So I obviously had to leave the bike there and luckily there was no damage to the bearings or anything, so I just have to get a new space and nut, which add about £60 to my bill Crying or Very sad Oh well, it could have been MUCH MUCH worse, so I think £60 is fair game.

I was thinking over the weekend why it could have come off, the only solution I could come up with was I forgot to do the nut up tight enough when I tightened my chain. Thinking

So, I was rather lucky from that little ordeal. Very Happy

Lucky fella!!!!

Have not had a bike for over 6 months now, but from the age of 16 to 22 I used Guildford Tyres (the one in Chilworth I take it?) and always found them to be a good bunch of guys.

Yeah its the one in Chilworth, I always use them, as they are a great bunch as you said. And pretty good on prices for services/tires etc.

To top it all off the speedo cable snapped on my GPZ on Sunday as well. So I have two poorly bikes at the moment.

I hope for your sake that you did not apply the rear brake or you could be looking at an expensive new rear wheel. I made the mistake of forgetting to tighten my rear spindle on my Thundercat, many years ago. I only got to the end of the road and applied the rear brake, then I found the problem. Unfortunately, applying the brake clamped the rear disc in the caliper but allowed the rear wheel to twist, this damaged the disc mounting and it failed the next MOT on a warped disc. Replacing the disc revealed the warped wheel mounts.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers

So not only did you not tighten it up you also forgot to put the split pin back in......

I always use R clips and when i take it out stick it in the ignition switch Thumbs Up Can't start the bike without forgetting to replace it.

Do you lock it up with a chain through the back wheel? Just thinking if it's possible that someone has tried to have the wheel off in an attempted theft.

Yep, I think I'd notice when I went to undo a nut that wasn't there Mr. Green

Cheers

Wotcha.

<<sheepish look>>

I did that on the Enfield - then took the bike for MOT.
I noticed a "clonk" from the back brake and thought "Ah, I must have left the torque arm bolt loose - I'll fix that when I get to the MOT station"
Yep - bolt loose, quick twist of the spanner later and all is OK.

It was when Fred ( the MOT tester ) pointed out my rear wheel bearings were shot . . . . "No way - they were new this year"
The wheel did indeed wobble all over the show . . . . . . . . mainly because I had not tightened the spindle up. Oops Embarassed

No, it does not have a split pin. Not sure why it doesn't but, it doesn't.

No rear wheel lock occurred, but now you come to mention the caliper and rear disk, I will get them looked at, especially the rear disk, that would make sense that it could warp due to the wheel movement. Thumbs Up

I did that on my CG ages ago, rode 150 odd miles to Oxford, then about 120 back home when the spindle slipped out of the swingarm and the back wheel dropped off.

Did another 20 miles with some duck tape wound round the spindle thread and then it happened again, so I left the bike in a farm and walked back home Very Happy

Surely your rear spindle has a hole through it to take a split pin or R clip?

I'm mega paranoid about this happening. In fact on Saturday I tightened my chain, and had to shoot out quickly. I'd put the bike back together, got to the end of the street and thought "Did I tighten the nut?", turned round and double checked (Of course I had). Just one of my biking 'ocd' habits. Embarassed

Many modern bikes don't have split-pins in the spindle - they use nyloc nuts instead.

Stupid question, what's a nyloc nut? My cbr6 doesn't have a hole in the spindle to take a pin.

Do they? I can't think of any bikes I've seen with nyloc nuts on spindle nuts Confused.

Plenty without splitpins though. (Incidentally, if you have one, replace the split-pin with an R-Clip, much less hassle Smile ).

Has a ring of nylon in the end just after the thread so that when you tighten it the nylon deforms and makes it harder to undo them.

Most R&G kits have them.

Never seen a rear wheel spindle with them though!

All my bikes (cept the NTV) have had regular nuts, no nylock, split pins or R-clips.

I've never seen a nyloc nut used on a spindle either. If I bought a bike with a nyloc spindle nut I'd be getting my drill bit set out and a proper nut.

There's no way I'd be happy with just a nyloc nut. I'd also be replacing the nut everytime I'd have the back wheel off.

R clips all the way.

My KTM(s) actually have a solid nuts, so you couldn't even do that, without even more surgery anyway.

Perhaps not strictly 'Nyloc' brand but that type of self-holding nut, no split-pins or R clips. PS the condition of nyloc nuts is defined by the run-down torque so you only need to replace them if that is out of spec.

If you had this type of spindle and were worried about it then you could buy a spindle for a yank bike as they have to have a mechanical security like castle-nuts & clips on them in some states.

On my SV there is a washer which has something on it which bites into the thread if the nut were to wear loose or i was told.

Ok; never seen anything with a nylon-locking nut on the spindle Smile.
Don't think I've ever seen one as big as most modern 'performance' bikes tend to have.
