PostPosted: 14:32 - 01 Feb 2009    Post subject: it think my engines seized! Reply with quote

i was riding my gs 500 yesterday, when i was waiting at the lights it cut out. i tried to start it but the starter motor got slower and slower, i know i had charging problems, but i think that is due to a corroded connection on the starter solenoid.
as i was trying to bump the bike, the wheel was locking up in every gear. so i pushed it home which took 2 hours!
today i pooped it on the centerstand, put it in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th and have tried to spins the back wheel by hand.
it will move when it takes the slack off the chain, but then wont budge, even in 6th. so u think the engine has seized?
cheers,
josh

Take the spark plugs out then try it again turning the wheel by hand , without the spark plugs you won't have any compression and thus the pistons should move up and down somewhat easier than normal when the rear wheel is turned by hand.

If they don't then your engine might be seized.

Sounds to me like the battery is flat.

Charge the battery and give it a whirl.

I think you are pushing your luck trying to turn over a 500 twin by pulling ther rear wheel round, even in top. Or you could try doing it with the sparkplugs out.

If you wanted to check if the engine turns, you'd be better getting a socket on the end of the crank and trying to turn it by hand. Unfortunately from what I can see on pictures, a GS500 doesn't have an inspection cover allowing you to do this without removing the crankcase covers.

In general, if a big 4-stroke like that has seized, it is going to need a wholesale replacement of parts anyway. Giving it a try with a fully charged battery is unlikely to make things very much worse.

Try the same with the spark plug taken out.

Take the bike out of gear. Take off the side cover to give access to the nut on the end of the crank, the one used to adjust the valves. Try turning the engine over by hand.

yeah taking the plugs out was the first thing i did and it dnt budge.
as for the battery issue, its a brand new batt andi charged it last nite. the starter motor would engage so i took it off the engine then tried it, and nothing. so i looked at my starter solenoid, it looks like one of the connections is slightly corroded. mybe this is creating o short and draining my batt?

Can't say for definate on your bike but many have a dowel to locate the cover.

I usually just gently tap all around the cover with a soft mallet to release it.

Hit it with a rubber mallet or put a piece of soft wood on it and hit it with a hammer.

You need to break the gasket seal.

Place a piece of wood on it and give the wood a tap and it should shock it free, Make sure you have taken all the bolts holding it on first though.

cheers guys, well i will try that, and if the engine turns over, that would be ace, then all i would need to do is hopefully clean up the connections on that starter solenoid, i will jump on it now before it gets dark. cheers

just tried to turn the engine over on ther rotor on the right hand side of the engine and it made a crunching noise and wouldnt turn, i think i may have slightly broken it. haha.
probably on con rod or sumut has snapped. there is oil in the engine so i dont think that would have been the problem. ah well. looks like im gunna have to cath a bus and a train to work. pants.

Before you write the engine off altogether, make sure it isn't the starter clutch/starter motor having self-destructed.

I don't know your bike but I'd imagine you could remove at least the motor fairly easily.

Failing that, don't forget to post pics when you perform the post-mortem. It takes a fair bit of doing to blow up a GS500 motor so I'm expecting something pretty spectacular. See if you've beaten my girlfriends record of putting a 270 degree bend in a conrod.

It's a GPz305. They do stuff like that all the time.

i've no idea of the XJ400 but would expect it to be a revvy little thing...

but for 500 i'd seriously consider the GS750 if i was needing another bike

i hate to mention this but if you aint running fast enough tryin to bump the bike it will lock the rear if your in gear when you bang the clutch out i allways leave it in second, and jump on the back seat an hold the bars so my weight pushes the rear tyre into the floor.

was harder for me in the snow and ice mind.....

Drain the oil and see if there are any bits in it.

£500 for a near-mint GS750 is a total bargain. Buy it, sell it for profit, get a modern bike.
