Learn all the possible routes so you know what the speed limit is on every road, which lane you need to be in for certain roundabouts, where your Stop signs and unmarked crossroads are and if there are any bus lanes on the route remember the times that they open and close.

If you know the roads well it makes it much easier and takes off a lot of the pressure.

One tip that helped me pass...

Err on the side of caution. ride at 29mph in 30zones, 19 in 20mph zones etc. Approach all traffic lights as if they're just about to change to red (unless of course they are red, in which case stop!) and assume that eveyone on roundabouts is out to kill you! (which to be fair, the "L" plates are seen as a bullseye by some!)

If you are confident (but not cocky) and cautious (but not nervous) you cant go too far wrong!

If you're in the wrong lane for the exit or turning you were told to take, do not make errors in attempting to take that direction. Continue on in the direction your lane takes you. The examiner will then direct you back onto the test route.

You cannot be failed for going the wrong way.

Thumbs Up to this. If you fail the eyesight portion, you not only fail the test but the examiner'll have your licence off you. Which is going to suck if it's your car one as well!

When approaching a mini-roundabout, listen to the way the examiner gives you directions.

"Left at the roundabout"
"Right at the roundabout"
"Straight ahead"
etc.

This may save confusion as to whether or not the exit going off at an odd angle is left/right (and so you need to be indicating) or straight ahead Thumbs Up

At round abouts my examiner stated 1st, 2nd, 3rd exit etc

I wouldn't worry too much about memorising the ride. You have enough to do throughout the ride without trying to remember the road you are on, besides if you are reliant on that then you will be truely wrongfooted if you end up on a different set of roads for any reason. It does happen.

On a related note the examiners instructions are not set in stone - if you end up in the wrong lane, taking the direction - whatever don't stress it. The test is NOT a navigation test.

Talk yourself throughout the ride, tell yourself what you should be doing.

If you've bought a 125 yourself to pass make sure and measure the L plates. My examiner almost told me to go home. If it weren't for a nice instructor popping by and giving me his front one I would've lost out on 80 quid and probably still be on L's just now. God bless friendly strangers.

life savers when changing position in the road. i.e changing lanes, moving away, exiting roundabouts.
don't go too slow some examiner may see this as you are not confident
make sure you know how to ride safely. like not breaking on corners so make sure your going the correct speed for the corner before you get to it.

oh and make sure you can do the u-turn without thinking about it. find a tight road where you can just about get your bike round and practise on that. i could do my u-turn while the bike was on full lock so that no road would come as a surprise. i also did it the other way (turning left) so that i knew i could do anything i wanted with the bike.
the emergency stop also needs to be done in all conditions. (not so much the current icy conditions many of us are experiencing at the moment) but wet and dry. also need to be in full control. if you do lock a wheel need to be able to release and then reapply

turn off your indicators after you have turned off and also, if you are going down an unfamiliar road and you arent sure if its a 40 or a 30 because you have missed the sign - stick at 30 and look at side roads for signs of speed limit changes this saved my bacon a few times if theres no sign its 30 and if theres a sign saying 40 then its 40 - just got to have a sharp eye

1. Indicators - On the emergency stop I left mine on as I went round the block. Luckily no other car was around at the time and noticed it before pulling up after the stop. 'Push to Kill' is a good phrase to drum in to your head whilst riding.

2. Bus Lanes and lane discipline - Know your route and check whether you are allowed in bus lanes at certain times of day, dont forget your lifesaver before turning left! Laughing If you feel something is creeping up on you, take a quick look as it may become a serious on your scorecard.

3. Be in the correct gear - May sound daft but a 30mph road should only require 2nd-3rd gear, if you have to make a sudden move or emergency stop, it prevents spending precious time trying to figure out your gears.

Go out for a ride just before the test to check the conditions. Then practice the emergency stop in the prevailing conditions.

If you are taking the test on your own bike and it has drum brakes, make sure they are propertly adjusted. I only found out my rear brake needed adjusting half an hour before my test when I tried an emergency stop.

Make lots of observations and do so by moving your head not your eyes, the examiner cant see you moving your eyes.

You cannot be failed for not hearing an instruction, so if the choice is between going the wrong way and making out you didn't hear the instruction, or making a manouveur that could be viewed as dangerous such as leaving a lane change too late, then choose the former.

Just a question to add. As I'm about to have my final days of DAS and test on monday.

If I want to stay put and not filter or use a bus lane (given it's permitted to do so), will I be penalised for just staying put in traffic, as if I were driving a car?

If you're at a junction/roundabout and you get the chance to pull off leaving the examiner there, do so.. you get valuable time where he/she cant see you fully and more chance of not getting marked down on anything Smile

i did this 3 times on my test, passed with 0 minors

Most people will recommend you do not filter on your test.

Feel free to ask your examiner whether they mind if you use bus lanes or not. Mine was in a car and asked me before the test started not to use them.

Iirc my instructor said the examiner can actually fail you for not using the bus lane when possible. Not sure if thats 100% accurate but they can definaly mark you down for it.

Filtering is not expected and will probably be frowned on if you attempt it.
