I've been trying to sort out the graphics on my PC. The onboard (intel) video chip is blacklisted for Linux so I can't get any of the funky effects.

I have a compatable PCI graphics card with a supported Nvidia chip on which is working and has the driver sucessfully installed.

It is working but not properly or to its full potential. The reason being, the system is still detecting the onboard chip. There is an option in the BIOS to use the PCI video but nothing to actually deactivate the onboard chip.

There are six jumpers on the motherboard. I know what four of them do, I can find no information whatsoever on the other two, nor can I find a manual for it anywhere, at least not one that mentions those jumpers. (It's a Trigem Glendale mobo details here ).

There is a chance one of those two jumpers deactivates the onboard video.
J1- FDD write protect
J2- Password setup
J3- CMOS setup
J4- CMOS clear
J5- ???
J6- ???

Question is, there is also a chance they do something else, one of them certainly does. So if I try them in a different position, am I going to do anything irreversable to my PC?

I have a sneaking suspicion I'll have to get a new mobo if I want to overcome this issue.

can you not deactivate the chip by uninstalling the hardware using linux hardware program

What would this program be called and I'll look for it.

Its definitely not jumpers J1-J4.
In what way does detecting the onboard graphics affect the graphics from the card?

Can't you choose which card you use in the BIOS?

It wont run advanced graphics effects. It's trying to use both video cards similtaneously, which in many ways, is worse than it was before.

Anyway, fixed it.

In case anyone finds this thread via google (seems to be a relatively common problem and this forum gets strong hits). Running Ubuntu Jaunty.

Via terminal:
Code:
sudo gedit etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

added
Code:
#Disable onboard intel graphics chip in favour of PCI card
blacklist agpgart
blacklist intel_agp

For good measure, I also added them to
Code:
sudo gedit etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Althought I suspect this doesn't do anything.

Then reinstalled the restricted driver for the Nvidia PCI card via system>administration>Hardware Drivers.

Then switch off the computer and switch back on again.

I had to reinstall the driver a couple of times for some unknown reason.

And just a note to the Linux nae-sayers. This isn't a linux problem, it is an intel problem. If the Ubuntu developers were allowed access to the driver code for the graphics chip in my computer, it would be fully supported by now. Nvidia go halfway and make a linux compatable driver available.[/code]

You can choose which one you use, but they both remain active, connected and powered up. The OS isn't telepathic, it sees both and installs the drivers for both. Confusion and an absence of wobbly windows ensues.

So, a combination of having to workaround a poorly supported chipset (thanks Intel) with a minimal, poorly equipped BIOS (thanks compaq).

Interesting, I used to be able to run Compiz OK on my Trigem Imperial but it doesn't seem to want to let me do it on Karmic. Is the blacklist a Compiz, Ubuntu or general Linux thing? I did manage to use Compiz with full functionality (albeit slow) using Mandriva 2007.1 Spring and 2008.0 Powerpack.

Actually, looking at the link your motherboard is a Trigem Imperial GLVE, Glendale is the codename of the Celeron chip the motherboard was designed for.

The intel chip is blacklisted in compiz, the generic, open source driver is not stable enough to do the complex graphic effects in Jaunty and Karmic. It's a known bug and they are working on it.

As such, compiz wont work properly if you use this chip, it sees the blacklisted driver and aborts. You can force it to use compiz by bypassing the checks but in my case, it was unuseably buggy (loosing top bars off windows, flicker and all sorts.)

Typing compiz in a terminal will show you where it is hanging.

You can bypass compiz checks by doing:
Code:
mkdir -p ~/.config/compiz; echo SKIP_CHECKS=yes >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager
then try to start compiz. Just don't come crying to me if X crashes and you can only startup in a terminal.

What I was trying to do was use a seperate, supported graphics card instead but compiz kept seeing the onboard one and failing. Most BIOS would allow you to deactivate the onboard chip but my one doesn't.

As a workaround, I've blacklisted the drivers for the onboard intel graphics so the kernel can't use them at all and has to use only the nvidia PCI one. If you do this without another functional (non intel) graphics chip in your computer, you wont get any graphics at all.

You may find the script detailed on this link handy (probably wont fix anything but it'll tell you why it isn't working):

does anyone actually use the compiz effects after the initial "hey friend look what my desktop can do" phase?

It's pretty handy if you're using something like GIMP with multiple dialogues and multiple images. Greatly assists in stacking the various windows neatly. You can have an image open on each workspace and flick yourself between them as required, taking the dialogues with you. You can also have a quick peek at what's under a dialogue box by stretching the corner down without having to resize it.

Or like I quite often do. Want to post an image on a thread in a website. Website open in one workspace, GIMP in another. You can also pick up an image off firefox and drag it directly into GIMP without having to save it somewhere.

I believe the Intel Linux drivers (for graphics and Wi-Fi) are open source - https://intellinuxgraphics.org/ - https://intellinuxwireless.org/ Thumbs Up Development has been slow but there have been improvements very recently. Have you tried the new drivers that are in Ubuntu 9.10?

To be honest, the nvidia chip on the PCI card is WAY better than the onboard one and has about 4x the RAM so I'll probably be leaving it as-is.
