once i've run my bike in i will be riding it to work (60ish mile round trip) and just wondered if anyone ever uses an mp3 player when riding?

would it be any different from listening to a cd in the car?

I do and have done for ages, its finding the right balance with the volume, needs to be loud enough to hear it but not so loud that it drowns out whats going on around you, but once you've cracked that I dont see any probs. It does break up the boredom and I find that when I do ride without it my helmet seems really noisy, so I usually use it for most journeys.

Have seen a few people mention on here that they listen to an MP3 when ridining but I prefer to be albe to hear the traffic around me and be far more aware of my surroundings.

I personally see it as a distraction, but each to their own.

I've done a lot of miles in the past on motorways ,travelling from Glasgow to Northampton, twice a week , the drone on the motorway can really send you asleep. I found it better to have some great tunes that kept my adrenaline and spirits up, not sure what the legal side of it is but i felt it was far safer for me, and made the run more enjoyable.
p.s. please add to my recent Post on "Best tunes"

When I go to my bro in wales (1.5hrs) I use the ipod. Made up a playlist of all my fav tracks from all the albums and place it on random (about 6 hrs worth) perfect for a long (boring motorway) ride.

Only prob is getting the earphones right then helmet on, adjust necktube, aw bugger ones come out = helmet off.....repeat....

I've you're asking if it's a no no, well I'm 99% sure wearing both ear plugs is illegal.. I've never bothered tho. I like to hear what's going on and love the sound of the engine.
Last year I rode from Hull to Le Mans on an R6. Left the ferry at Zeebrugge and did a 7 and a half hour ride there. didn't wish I had a radio once.. vrooooom Very Happy

yeah.. just checked and I was wrong. it is advised against and could affect any accident claims, but not illegal in the UK.

After loosing my earplugs ive been riding everywhere with headphones in and i just want to point out that headphones are no replacement for earplugs in terms of noise reduction, after a recent trip from london to loughborough uni and back i had a ringing noise in my ears for a day or two, not nice! That was with headphones by the way, most of that was with ~90mph winds so that probably doesnt help, it hasnt developed into that ear problem thingy where you get the permenent ringing (tittinus or tinnitus or whatever it is) but ive heard its not nice and i wouldnt want that ringing to become a permenent thing so i will be going and buying some more ear plugs soon Thumbs Up

Just thought i'd share the other side of the story, oh and its not down to choice of headphones, these are in ear ones that wern't particularly cheap.

I have one of these and I listen to the radio pretty much every day on it. Because the speaker pads don't go inside the ear like earphones, I can still hear a fair bit of traffic noise. Thumbs Up

Edit: That ringing you hear after being exposed to high sound pressure levels is actually hair cells in the cochlea dyeing. They don't regenerate and you can't undo the damage. Do it too much and then you get tinnitus. You might also notice everything being a bit muffled when you get off the bike. That's an effect called Temporary Threshold Shift and its the muscles in your ear tensioning up to in effect dampen the three bones in your ear which form a natural amplifier. They eventually return to normal but if you regularly batter your ears they can stay tense and the condition can become permanent.

Do you use these with or without earplugs in ? I know it sounds stupid but would be loud enough to use with earplugs in too.

Are these helmet speakers any good? I was thinking of buying them. I listen to my mp3 player every time im on the bike but it's a bit of a pain when you put your helmet on and one for your earphones falls out Mad

I had helmet speakers in - Velcro in - wires can be a nightmare so you need to find a way to tuck them under the padding.
There not bad. Tiny bit more comfortable - but people with long hair need to take care - Mine would get caught, rip and then in the end would just removed the velcro - So im back to earphones Thumbs Down

Wind noise from a helmet can be massive. Year back PB did a test using a single bike and loads of helmets, same rider and 100mph round a test track with a pickup for a noise meter in the rider ear. Quietest helmet was 105db, loudest was 120db, both easily loud enough to damage your hearing.

With normal ear plugs you are mainly relying on the music being loud enough to drown out the wind noise. Noise cancelling ones might well work though (and similar technology has been talked about to replace silencers on cars).

Have heard of people being had up for driving without due care and attention for using personal stereos. From memory the defence was to only use one ear piece.

All the best

Keith

Using one ear peice is safer and will better in court should anything happen.

I tried two ear peices and as some of you mentioned drowing out almost everything just didn't seem very safe.

You don't appreciate how much you use your ears, or at least feel alot safe being able to hear your surroundings.

I used to use an mp3 with my CG all the time.
Stopped once I got the 400 and the first time I used it on the 400 I crashed.
I do put a small amount of blame on the mp3 as it did distract me, their ok if you are on a small little bike where the power isn't going to suprise you but on a bike with more power you need your wits about you.

used my phone mp3 player today, had it on 6 which was loud enough to hear but still hear everything going on around me...made the ride alot more fun, did 85odd miles today just plodding around southend way, some lovely country roads but they all have works going on so got them shitty temp traffic lights Evil or Very Mad

in an entirely coincidental case i almost came off today, was coming down a hill and the car stopped in front of me, pressed my foot down on the brake and the back slid about a foot to the left, luckily it stopped before it was too late, i guessed it rained there more than anywhere else or somthing lol

I don't and never have done. I need my hearing to assist with working out what the idiots around me are about to do, what my engine is doing.

Something to keep in mind is that you have a lot less peripheral vision available on the bike than in a car, so you need to use your hearing to compensate more.

On really, really long straight bits I have been known to talk to myself, talk to the bike or even on rare occasions sing (only fair asn the bike sings to me). Having no distractions while on the bike really is no big deal.
