Sorry for yet another brake question, but here is a picture of my piston:

https://img513.imageshack.us/my.php?image=piston.jpg

Firstly, it's supposed to be completely flat (apparently) yet it is pitted to buggery and looks like a big chunk has been knocked out of the top of it on one side (you can't see that so well in the photo).

Why has it gone like that, and can I sand it down or should it be replaced?

Also (forgot to mention), is there supposed to be a dust cover over the top of the piston? The RAC bloke said that was missing.

Hi

Suspect that piston has some kind of stuffer in it. Seen Kawasaki ones before with what looks almost fibrous, and had decayed a bit. Presume it is there to try and insulate the brake piston from the head of the brake pad.

Very few Japanese bikes have a rubber boot around the piston to protect it. Although there will be some rubber bellows around the pins the caliper slides on.

All the best

Keith

Cheers Kickstart.

Planning to pop the piston out, give it a bit of a clean up and see if it's scratched at all around the edge, if not then I'll just change the seals.

You're right in that it does have bellows around the sliding pins.

Just that the RAC bloke seemed sure it should have a dust cover (oh alright then, 'boot' Razz) on it.

If the face of the piston or the inside is pitted it doesn't matter... as long as the outside diameter is ok. As kickstart mentioned some kwaks have a some sort of bung in the piston... it looks like a wine bottle cork/cylindrical piece of wood.
