Hi all,

Because I'm stupid I didn't notice the oil level had dropped right down on my Hornet 9 until yesterday when it was well below the minimum mark. I had to add well over a litre to get it up to the max line.

It was fine a couple of months and approx 200 miles ago. Am I likely to have done any damage?

Cheers,

maybe a little bit more engine wear than normal. depends how you rode it. high revs especially from cold would be bad. if all sounds and runs fine fine then assume it is. if you notice anything weird at all check it out. probably haven't done that much damage

Hi

If there was enough oil that the oil pump was never left wanting then no problem at all. If the oil pump couldn't pick up any oil (which might have triggered the oil pressure warning light) then potentially a hell of a lot of damage.

All the best

Keith

Thanks guys. I never ride hard from cold and haven't given it any stick really due to the road conditions and the fact that I've recently upgraded from a 600 Divvy.

The warning light did not show at least that I noticed and it runs and sounds fine so fingers crossed!

Incidentally would you say it's normal for an engine of this type to get through a litre of oil in a couple of months with some short journeys and several 20 mile trips to work and the same back?

Hi

Does seem a bit much for oil consumption, but make sure you haven't over filled it, and that it wasn't a bit low before.

If the oil level had been low enough for the pump not to pick anything up then the damage would happen when you rode off even if you took it a bit easy.

All the best

Keith

Did you check the level on the stand or upright as how you should check it can vary.

Hi,

I checked it with the bike level. On the side stand the inspection glass doesn't show any oil at all when the level is at max with the bike level.

Thanks,
