Becoming an organ donator is not really something we like to think about or discuss........ but if you take 2 minutes to ensure your name is included in the register you really could make a difference to someone who is desperately clinging on to life.

It is important to let your loved ones know your wishes as 60% of people on the Organ donor register are denied the chance to donate because their next of kin were unaware.

At present there are just over 15 Million names are on the Organ Donation Register and today more than 9,000 people in the UK need an organ transplant that could save or dramatically improve their life.

Most are waiting for a kidney, others for a heart, lung or liver transplant. But less than 3,000 transplants are carried out each year.

There is a desperate need for more donors. Last year more than 400 people died while waiting for a transplant. One in ten people waiting for a heart transplant will die and many others will lose their lives before they even get on to the waiting list.
The more people who pledge to donate their organs after their death, the more people stand to benefit.

By choosing to join the NHS Organ Donor Register you could help make sure life goes on.

Good idea, people don't generally talk about this. When I replaced my paper license with the photocard one I ticked the box and also had a discussion with my family to say that I had done. Saves a lot of decision making at a time of grief.

We have this debate every few months some will some like myself wont.

Reasons

Ii had an accident and had blood. So then started giving blood. Then i found out from a very relable source that they sell a fair share of the blood to Private hospitals which is wrong in my opinion. Why should they be using me to make money what am i a human liquid cash machine. So i figured ive given back a lot more that i took so if they want more they can pay me for it . If i unfortunatly have to have more i will give back more than i take. Then i will stop again.

As for organ donations my fear is if im in an accident and there is a 99% i will die and someone down the ward needs a heart whats to say they wont write off the 1% chance i will live and let me die to save the other guy. Shocked

Really?? I also had a accident and was told when I went to give blood I could not due to having received some before.

I would happily give any organ and TBH dont really care how it gets used, yea im sure some go into private or profit made from them but i doubt it a large %

I cant even imagine how i would feel in the situation of needing an organ and receiving one

We all have a choice and that is a great thing as far as I am concerned.

Private hospitals do not collect blood from the public as there is a huge cost and infrastructure needed to get blood, just think about paying the nurses, storage, trasportation, the tea and biscuits, advertising, reminder letters and the like. All of those steps to get blood have a cost and so why should the NHS give the blood to private hospitals for free? A private hospital is a business not a free health service.

If its a choice of saving a patient or letting them die so that the organs can be transplanted........ every human would rather save the first life rather than being morally responsible for a death they could of prevented.

Just my views.... but I am glad that we are at least talking about it. Its not just adults that need transplants, there are many children waiting and that is the hardest part. If my child needed blood I'd give all I had.

Yes private hospitals are a buisness and are being paid by the patient/insurance for the blood. So if they want blood why dont they do as the Nhs do BUT pay people to give blood. Instead the NHS is basicly becoming a buisness with blood as its product.

If i give blood to the NHS i expect it to be used in an NHS hospital on an NHS patient.

Another thing i always wondered.
I know there are some rare blood types out there so if the bank only has one bag of the rare stuff left and 2 orders come in both at the exact same time and the same urgency. 1 NHS patient and 1 Private who would get the blood ???
The NHS patient the blood was intended for or the guy with the wedge of cash. Question

Heres a post that got a lot of people thinking
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=164148&highlight=organ+donor Question

From my limited knowledge of blood, I am pretty sure it doesn't 'keep' forever so selling off a surplus to me seems fine, the NHS makes money which should allow me to have a better service.

I am organ donor and have made sure my parents are well aware of this. Also care my donor card in my wallet. I am a registered bloody donor however I am yet to give blood. Went to do it the other day however I went all hot/shaky/faint while filling out the bloody form. So there wasn't much help there. I hadn't had lunch (was about 1pm) and had gone from a cold walk into a hot stuffy waiting room.

I shall try giving blood again soon, hopefully my body won't panzy out as I want to give blood and have no fear of needles or anything.

Quite. It certainly changed my perspective on things. Since that thread i have given blood and i probably will again the next time but that will be it! 6 pints in total should cover any accident i might have so that's all they are getting.

If i got a cast iron guarantee that my blood was going to NHS patients i would consider giving again. The world is all about money these days . The silver spoon brigade get an easy enough life as it is so i'll be damned if i'm going to make it any easier by letting them jump straight to the front of the queue.

Its stupid that they still have to have the talk with the faimly, when you have clearly made your wishes known.
My mrs is not a happy bunny that i want my organs to be donated should the worst happen....
So despite me carrying at least 2 donor cards and being registered on the d/b. She could turn round and say no....

Having given over 50 pints blood, donation is a painless thing to do.
Started when the bike club i used to belong to orginased a trip to donate blood, when they were wanting new donors so at least 20 of us all turned up on our bikes......
They had the hard task of then telling us that we could not donate at that session, as they were not prepared to risk so many 1st timers all on bikes.
So we all left and a few of us went to the local ones to us.

As selfish as some people might say this is
i dont want anybody having my organs,
as has been said if i end up in a bit of a bad state, whats the chances of the paramedics seeing ive got a donor card and that hearts are needed for transplants and letting me die, and before people say this never happens within the last month there was a news story that went national about paramedics letting someone die on purpose in their care..

I'm not an organ donor, and I refuse to be one.

I give blood when I can, but I don't wish to give my organs away when I'm dead.

Its a good point, some doctors could decide privately that it would be better to let you die and give the organs to someone with a higher chance of survival. Although this is effectively murder and against the doctor's duty of care to you, can you be totally sure it doesn't and has never happened?

I can see why people would think that, but it would have to be a pretty callous doctor to put a greater value on one life that another, or even to let one die to save 5.

Just how would the A&E doc thats treating you, know if your organs were suitable for anyone on the list... Of which they would have no knowedge of.
They would need to make quite a few tests before they could tell if anyone would be suitable.
