90s 2 Stroke 250cc+ Sports Bikes

Hi! For a while I've quite fancied a two stroke bike, but I don't really know much about these!

Can anyone advise me on which bikes are defiantly worth a look, and which ones to avoid. Anything special on two strokes to look out for?

Any other good resources?

There's a buying guide to RGV250s in this month's Classic Motorcycle Mechanics.

The type of bike you're looking at will need to have a top-end rebuild fairly regularly so make sure you know when it was last done or budget accordingly.

I had two RS250s and really liked them for road riding.
The pre 98 models have a slightly soft front end, but still capable enough on the road.

RGV, like the RS I thought, is supposed to have top ends done every 10,000 miles, which isn't too bad, especially presuming it's a second bike.

Late model NSR's - too many electronics and cost a bomb to deristrict (and are no faster than a KR1 or RGV when done). At least if you are going to have a highly strung 2T make it simple.

had an RGV250p for 3 years , spanked the arse off it everyware including the IOM
never had one thing go wrong with it and that was useing it all year round work ect
did get it new though , more smiles per miles than big bikes Very Happy

I'll present my slightly biased view.

MC21 NSR250 made 1990 -93 the newer MC28 as BLUEX5 mentions i a pain to derestrict. to get 60bhp out of an MC21 just takes a pair of snips a soldering iron and 10 minutes of your time.

NSR's are getting expensive now as everyone is starting to keep hold of them.

The 28 needs most of the race kit as far as I'm aware, which includes pipes, carb internals, airbox bits and wiring harness. Borderline not worth doing IMHO.

A HRC card alone will not give a 28 60bhp, as BLUEX5 says they do indeed need loads doing to them.

Even the flywheel on a 28 is restrictive.

The late TZR250R V-twin is IMO the most Beautiful 250cc sportsbike ever made! They are also more reliable than the Reverse twin if left std. Id have one over any RGV, NSR or RS250.

ive owned a couple of 250 smokies, a rgv250 when i was 15 and first got my learners licence, it was a mad bike, so hard to keep in the power range, but a brilliant bike none the less, a few years later i bought a rz250 im not sure if you got them in the uk, but it was a great all round bike, dispite being a little on the ugly side,
ive also ridden mates rs250 pritty much the same as the rgv,
and a nsr which i liked least of all, dispite it probably being the best looking.
it really just depends on what you want the bike for
