Are there any nice places to live left in the UK?

Can anyone suggest some nice areas whether it be towns or cities that are actually worth living in or near these days?

Strange question I know that I'll explain in a bit.

I would say Newcastle, if you live in Northumberland area, or North Yorkshire. Hellish cold mind.

Anywhere else 'nice' is going to be very, very expensive.

Come to Cheltenham, but don't bring anyone else and don't tell anyone it's still a pleasant area to live.
In Cheltenham good places are, Charlton kings, Lansdown, Bishops Cleeve, Gotherington or Prestbury.

Norfolk/Norwich is still a fairly nice place to live, some of the small villages are a bit inbred but you're probably used to that by now being in Oz

This is a loaded question.

I've just moved out of the City to a small coastal village. Seemed like a good idea at the time and it is quiet, but its not ideal.

Everyone says the place where my mum lives seems lovely and ummm, idyllic. Its a snake pit of gossip and small minded racist bigoted village idiots who'd probably melt if they went out-with the 30mph limit signs.

I suppose what I mean is, a place may seem nice, but it might just be because you're not familiar with it.

On living in the city/country, I always said both places are nice to visit, but I couldn't live in one F/T. This is as close to reality as I can get, I'd be bored in the country but would be pissed off with the noise and pace of life in the city.

In all honesty, the nicest place I've ever visited was a village called Sheildaig up near Torridon in North West Scotland. It seemed perfect, the sun was out, the tide was in. There were some kids in the village shop buying ice cream, the only real noise was a two stroke motorbike in the distance and you have to forgive that.

When I wasn't in my city centre flat, I'd be in my cottage on the outskirts of that village. (I'd need a helicopter to travel though, its miles away.)

Cornwall / Devon , its devilishly expensive to live out there though , and it is also incredibly isolated you live near Truro take you 90 minutes to get to Plym the nearest reasonably big town , take you 3 hours to get to Exeter a bigger town.

But towns on a map are in effect one street towns where the main road runs through the town, there are a couple of pubs a fish and chips and thats it...... entertainment like live music , comedy clubs is non existant.

There is a terrible lack of jobs in such areas though...

Oh and everybody has 6 toes.

I apologise for the question. Its like asking whats the best bike, I'm sorry.

Its maybe an impossible question as house prices, schools, local amenities, crime rates and chav populations all vary and appeal to more than others.

Think it largely depends on what you want.

I would say there are loads of nice places, but for me I would go for a smallish village that is pretty close to a reasonable size town. Advantages of a small community but if you want a night out on the tiles then it is just a short taxi ride away.

As to Aus, difficult to say but you have only been there a very short time. Not really time to settle down, find places / people you get on with and get back into having a few of the toys you are used to.

Lincolnshire is alright. The chavs have made it into the towns but there's a lot of hidden gems around in the countryside, and some underrated/undiscovered countryside. The cost of living is very cheap compared to the south of England. Speed cameras are still uncommon, except for a couple in the larger towns and a few dotted along the roads around Boston. House prices are still relatively low, at least in the area immediately around me.

The problems are that you're miles away from the amenities of a city, public transport is a joke, the roads can be anything from a bit of a state in the summer to downright treacherous in the winter, and income is among the lowest in the UK. A lot of work is seasonal, although I guess that won't be a problem for you.

Perhaps a bit of an oddball but my Mum lives 4 miles south of Preston in a pleasant (if suburbia is your kind of thing) but surprisingly large village. Starbucks, McDonalds, Subway, cheap petrol, supermarkets and everything else you are ever likely to want are all 5 minutes' drive away. A big city with lots of shops is 10-15 minutes away. And beautiful countryside is still only a few miles away in three directions. It's a nice refreshing change to stay there for the week after living in the sticks .

Wiltshire. Its nice here, loads of countryside, lovely roads, historical places, near enough to plenty within about an hours drive, pretty quiet, not a lot of speed cams, get a nice share of the good weather. Bath is lovely - missus would like to live there.

You mentioned Kent, I wouldn't go near Dartford, ha. The deeper you go into kent the better it gets (until you get to folkstone).

I moved to Norwich and I really like itm some lovely parts around here (some shitters too but you get that everywhere). More importantly it's not that expensive either.

I hated Australia, so I kinda feel for you guys! Apparently the West Coast is better, but I just bailed out and spent the rest of my time in NZ instead FWIW give it a really good go, as if you're anything like me you'll never want to go back once you come home and that's a bit of a shame really!

Anyway, back to the UK........Dorset is wonderful imo. You are not too cut off from the big stuff you need like getting to London, gigs and airports. You can be in a bigger town or out in the country and most places are close to the sea. If you head back to Essex then I'd recommend heading north, as I spent some time up near Radwinter and Debden and it was fab - again out of the way, quiet and tranquil but close enough to stuff if you need it.
