PostPosted: 13:41 - 27 Mar 2009    Post subject: Bikesafe on an A2 Reply with quote

A couple of mates of mine are attending a Bikesafe course next month and asked if I want to tag along too. Now with me being on an A2 licence and having a 650 bike that isn't restricted - should I be worried about the police taking an interest in this?

Now I know, after a lot of delving into the kind of bike I wanted, that my SLR is extremely unlikely to make 33BHP - in fact I'd put money on it! The 'new' specifications for my bike come in between 34BHP and 39BHP depending on where you look. I've also seen restrictor kits sold for my bike on the net at one time or another.

What I don't want is unnecessary attention and to be messed around by them perhaps not believing what I tell them. I guess I could go and get my bike dyno'd so I have proof, but what if it goes against what I believe and actually comes out at say 35BHP!?

Is any of this worth worrying about, or is the Bikesafe course worth me sorting this stuff out to do it??

Question Thumbs Up

You will be fine. I would be surprised if they ask but if they do just say it is and don't do 110mph.

The Police officers instructing the course aren't there to bust you.

Bikesafe's main aim is to teach us how to ride as safely as possible the way that they know we do away from civilisation. Thumbs Up

It is well worth doing.

Well I've already decided if I was ever stopped/asked etc I'd just be honest and state to my knowledge the bike doesn't produce more than 33BHP anyway. And as for 110mph, it'd be a miracle if it ever reached 95mph!! Laughing

The coppers at the bikesafe courses couldn't give a sh1t how legal your bike is etc. You'll see plenty of small plates, no tax discs etc.

I did mine on my GS500 on an A2 licence, with a stupidly loud exhaust pipe, pissing oil every time we stopped.

My mate was also on his A2 and had an unrestricted 600 bike with a loud pipe, and his speedo cable snapped half way through and ended up speeding through a few places.

The copper was on a harley and embarresed us with his speeds when we thought we were trying.

You have to show yoru papers at the start of the day, then its all done and dusted and off to the nearest twisties and burger bar!

I did one in SE (Bath area) and we didnt go over 60mph. It was very different to what i was expecting, more a taste of advanced riding stuff really.

It was still good but i found it could have been done on a CG125 as the speeds were very slow (trying to implement all the stuff like position etc)

Maybe different counties go about it differently

Just one further question, does the Bikesafe certificate help with cheaper insurance or anything like that?

Carole Nash won't reconise it so don't expect cheaper insurance. You do get a goody bag though. Laughing Free Buff etc.

Think cost/goodies bags depend on the county. Mine was £10 and no goody bag. Though in Sussex think there like £50

It's now free in North Wales for a two course the first time you do it but it's normally £80 - £100. Shocked

I done it in Sussex. They went over Docs but that was it. The Morning session covered some classroom based stuff which was useful.

They didn't act over the top and say we're ace/you're not either which was nice.

The afternoon was groups of two going out to a place of your choice. My group went from Bexhill > Bury Hill via a nice twisty route on the way and then back on the A27. Speed was encouraged as long as it was appropriate and sensible.

Found it a good day, got a goody bag with a few bits in (Cup/Roadcraft book/various other bits), it was £50 but the main reason for this is people would book on and not turn up so it was fair enough.

I'd recommend giving it a go though, even if you only pick up a few bits its well worth it.

Well mine costs £50 so I think I'll be giving it a go... though I've just noticed my rear tyre is wearing rather thin so I might have to put the money towards replacnign this instead! Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the helpful replies all. Thumbs Up
