I put a cyclone on my last bike and on my new bike, am actually very impressed considering the price. It seems loud enough (especially if you don't cover the siren) and basically does everything I want it to do without forcing me to sell the bike to afford it.

I bought them from here and both times got good service:

Is there not an alarm that you are able to just use straight off the battery? And not connect to the ignition etc.?

I had an Acumen alarm on my GPZ for a year, very impressed with it! £90 from Hein Gericke

A couple of flaws/annoyances about these..

Having had one for a month or so, I find it goes off at least once, after i've put it on my bike.

Also the theif can just put his hand over the siren holes.

I've got a cyclone on my TDM, £25 of eBay. Only good advice is avoid the talking one (unless of course you want to actually be a wanker. Laughing )

Took 30 minutes to fit sans immobiliser/kill switch function. It has an anti-tamper function. If someone is going to try and hotwire it in order to ride it away; they're going to have to break the steering lock which will set the alarm off anyway. Equally, if they're going to roll it or chuck it a van, the alarm should sound... It all renders the immobiliser a bit moot. The remote engine kill switch might be handy for potential hijacking though.

I found there was a trade off with where you position the hooter. (You know what I mean...)

Its really loud if its uncovered but its liable to getting howked off rendering the alarm pointless. If you stick it under the seat, it is stifled a wee bit, but it still does the job.

Tip. I have mine tie wrapped on to the frame hard against a rear panel. Because of the nature of the vibration/tamper switch. If you even brush against the panel it goes off, like wise with the frame.

Only thing I've noticed setting it off accidentally was heavy rain.

Thumbs Up

hi,
i wired in one of those cyclones on sunday, on my mates cbr125.
was fairly easy, though the instructions supplied are useless! (i got some decent instructions on another forum).
im not the best at electrics, but found it a doddle.
if you can cut & join wires, you can fit it.(just get some decent connectors)
i was well impressed when it worked, lol
its got sirens, indicators all flash,it talks (which i think would get extremely irritating after a few days-it reminds you to turn the alarm on when you switch your ignition key of,ffs! but you can unplug the speaker, as its seperate from the siren)
immobiliser & remote start.(bit of a gimmick),
the anti hi-jack thing looks like it could be fun,
i toyed with the idea of keeping one of the fobs & wait till my mate was passing mines, on his way to work.
then cut the power to the bike.
he' be wondering why it always cut out at exactly the same place, lol
oh, & it all works! lol
think it only cost him 20 odd quid. bargain i reckon.
cheers,
GAZ

I use a cyclone C11 on my CBR125. It's loud enough. It hurts my ears a bit if you switch it on/off while near the bike and are in an enclosed space like a back yard, and my ears are pretty shit after years of abuse from crusty punk rockery.

I don't use the immobiliser function tho. I considered it on the coil, maybe using a hidden fuse somewhere to bypass it if the alarm immobiliser function ever fucks up miles from anywhere. It's good enough for now as it is anyway.

hi,
only problem i had with the cyclone, was the led cable.
it comes with a lenth of wire with a led at one end & a little plug at the other.
but it wouldnt work.
led's fine thogh as it works straight from the battery??
just gonna wire it up some other way, as i dunno if having it constantly lit is a good idea.
i know they dont use much power, but surely it would drain an already dodgy battery?
cheers,
GAZ
oh & to the original poster-what type of alarm was it that was faulty?
i only ask, as my mate originally bought an alarm off ebay "beret" is the name on the box, looks similar to the cyclone but that was also faulty!

Mmm...

Although I've never fiddled with it, there are ways you can configure the alarm. For example you can turn the arming/disarming beep and the flashing indicators off by pressing a sequence of buttons on the fob.

It might be the case that the LED is deactivated, sure I read in my instructions that you could do that.

Have you tested the LED? If its faulty, its worth replacing it (only pennies) for the visual deterent. Or, get in touch with where you bought it and see if they'll send a replacement LED out, (they are that cheap.) Assuming of course it is the LED and not the box.

Thumbs Up

hi,
maybe... never thought of that.
dont have the instructions now, but dont think it said anything about de-activating the led.
heres the thing, the led it came with, did work, but now doesnt.
so i cut off the plug & wired it into a battery-nothing!
I then tried the led from the faulty alarm, which didnt have a plug, just bare wires (and was actually better quality, as it has an alloy screw mount rather than just a plastic push in mount) & wired that to the plug, but still nothing!
but when i wire that one straight to the battery, it stays lit!
cant figure it out.
dont think he's that bothered with the led though.
but after the hassle i had with drilling the correct sized hole in the rear tail plastics, he should be! lol
& he bought it from a member of another forum, so he cant complain really.
cheers,
GAZ

LEDs typically consume around 10mA (0.01 Amp) or so, so for a 6Ah battery, it would last 600 hours or 25 days constant use, assuming a fully charged battery and negligible self discharge.

You could check the voltage output of the plug/socket that goes to the LED, it should read a few volts. The value so long as its above 2V or so is not critical. If it reads zero then that's why your LED doesnt light. If it does, then maybe they wired it up with the wrong polarity. The D in LED stands for diode so it only works one way round. Wire it the other way round and it won't light up.

BTW Maplins sell flashing LEDs, no alarm required, if all you want is a flashing LED.

hi,
checked the plug at the time, voltage coming from the pins was around 3 or 4v.
tried reversing the cables, still nothing.
good idea about the flahing led from maplins though.
cheers,

I bought the cyclone one. Pretty impressive, certainly loud enough, but I ended up removing the imobiliser part - it seemed to drain the battery every few days. Working as just an alarm, the battery is now fine again.

For £25, I'd give them another chance any day.

+1 for the cyclone

Easy to fit and for the price fooking loud. LED supplied is bright and works as a visual deterrent. You can adjust the sensitivity so a fly farting next it wont set it off as this gets annoying.

I wired the immobilizer up and did a good job of it so unless the thief has a good knowledge of electrics and can work without touching the bike it will be ok.

As stated many times this doesnt prevent your bike being dumped in the back of a Mocked up AA, RAC or Greenflag van though.

Hi all
How easy are these to fit ? as i currently use a frigin heavy kryptonite new york lock on my ybr which is a killer weight in my rucksack, so i thought one of these and a disc lock might be better.
Im not sure if the seat on a ybr does lift up or not, so are they easy to fit on any bike?. Or would the motrax visha be a better alternative?.
Thnx
Mark

theyre pretty easy to fit, alot easier than youd think

ya just need very very basic knowledge of electronics and abit of common sense,

oh, and a soldering iorn if ya wanna do the job properly but ya can just twist the wires togeather, but i wouldnt advise it[/url]
