Hey, my local petrol station is really pushing the shell drivers club loyalty card thing.

Always banging on about it and telling me I should take one. I'm skeptical, and what I find strange is they have the cards in a pile not in the Shell leaflet like it is normally.

Also if you decline the card they swipe it themselves the put it aside.
Today I was finally like, ok let me have it. And he said 200 points on this one already (presumably as he's been swiping it for everyone who doesn't have / want one)

But how do I know if they just haven't massed registered each one to themselves hence that's why they are pushing it so hard.

My girlfriend had one(from the said petrol station) about a year ago and uses it almost every other day for her vectra. She registered it to her name/address and has never heard anything back from it. Whilst her sister and mum have one each from another garage and regulary receive updates.

Dodgy eh?

I have never bothered with any petrol loyalty schemes like this because I tend to just go and fill up wherever it's cheapest or somewhere that is close to/on the way to somewhere where I feel like going.

However I've always wondered if it would be worth using one to save money. I have a friend who will drive to the nearest town (seven miles away from his house) just to go to Tesco to fill up, when his girlfriend will be using the car the next day to go to work in said town (although not sure if that's for the clubcard points or just for an excuse to go for a ride).

In response to your original post, it sounds like a very big scam organised by the staff. Unless your girlfriend actually sent a form in the post and got a card back I would be very tempted to confront the staff and ask what's going on.

I have it as I spend about £400 a month on petrol.

It's a scam really in terms of how much I get back from what I spend. But I did get a £5 voucher off fuel. I got loads of other vouchers for pointless things like chewing gum but I'm only interested in fuel vouchers.

Considering I spent over £500 to get this £5 off it's very pointless but every little helps I suppose.

When you get the Shell card you go online and register it to yourself so you'll know the card is yours and not the shopkeepers. I've had one for about 4years along with a Nectar card, the Shell one is a total waste of time IMO, not sure if still works the same as it did a couple of years ago when I last used it but back then you had to fill up with a reasonably large quantity of fuel each month before you started earning points on every litre that would amount to anything, it was just pointless.

I always used BP and Nectar instead as it's much better, I've got something like 16,000 points on that now just haven't bothered spending them, ought to really.

Back when I was using these regularly I was filling up a Sprinter almost every day for about 2.5years so about 60 litres a day 5 days a week so we really spent some money on fuel but obviously didn't always fill up at BP, yet I think the 16,000 or so points i've accumulated would get me something fairly paltry like a fancy toaster or a DAB radio.

Got a Texaco card, I don't fill up at any particular garage, but if I use a Texaco one I use my card, nearly spent £500 over the past couple of years (bare in mind I don't choose them specifically) which gives me a whole £5 off fuel.

I know they just like to keep track of where I am filling up and trying to make me use only their garages but if you get that out your mind it works out nicely.
