Posted: 13:42 - 06 May 2009 Post subject: Building my own PC |
 |
|
Right..
Basic outline. I won't have any trouble building, installing and all the other odds and ends when it comes to building a PC. I was an I.T technician for a year when i was 16-18 years old. Also had no end of trouble with my own PC and other peoples.
Only problem is I havn't taken any interest in PC components since I left that job. So I have no idea what to buy!
I have a budget I would like to keep at (£250), although I can splurge a bit more if necessary.
I already have a monitor etc. I'm just looking at the base unit.
It will be used for gaming, although I'm not a "hardcore", I currently have an old Dell with a 256mb ATi and it seems to run everything I want at the moment, bar Oblivion. It runs, but not worth playing.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I really don't know where to start. |

The only exception is that XP or XP Pro will eventually be left behind, as one day Microsoft will stop providing updates like what happened with Windows Me in the past.
Windows XP software updates was supposed to end this year except the deadline was extended due to an uproar by the public. |
I think updates will be available at least until until Windows 7 is released.

Resizing a partion you mean? A useful feature on latops and some PCs that come with their drives split 50/50 into c: and d:. HP had a utility called Dashboard on their Windows 3.x PCs that was similar to Sidebar - not really revolutionary. Much of the rest is gloss that could have been included in an XP service pack to be honest.

The only downfull with that is your base system's hardware needs to be fairly up to date to stay fast due to the fact that Windows Vista requires a minimum of 1Gb of RAM to make use of all the features and therefore you will need 2Gb+ RAM installed system for memory hungry games, while XP really requires 512Mb RAM to run at a proper speed without it lagging but with 1Gb it works very well with games. |
Agreed, but I'd go with a miniumum of 2Gb for Vista and 1Gb for XP these days.

So you require the latest chipset to get support for Windows Vista. |
I don't quite understand that. XP has always had multi-processor support.
If I was buying a PC and it came with Vista then I'd stick with Vista. As long as you have a modern pc with sufficient RAM then it is a bit better than XP.
If I were building a PC and had copies of XP lying around then I'd certainly put XP on it. Vista isn't that much of an improvement to make me go out and buy a copy of the OS.
I use Vista at home and XP Pro at work. They both work fine, they just differ slightly in the way they present themselves (M$ has moved everything around again as they always do).
Unless you want to put your PC into an Active Directory domain I don't see any benefit in choosing XP Pro over XP home.

utter sh!t, i wouldn't buy a cd case nevermind PC components from them.
SCAN or eBuyer is your best bet.
I did a rebuild about 18months ago with an Intel Quad Core CPU, 6gb of Ram, nVidia 8800 GFX Card, IP35 Pro motherboard and its still able to play all the recent games with the GFX options turned up. |

Look, on that page click on the part where it says download processor drivers and it's listed within there known as dual core optomizer !!!!
Here's Microsoft's fix in regards to Windows XP in general running on multi core processor based systems.

I think i'm going to buy most of the components from eBuyer, i've had good experiences with them in the past so sticking with what i know.
So from the advice in this thread Intel is the best to go for, so whats a good mobo to start with?
Bare with me, you can tell im not up to speed at all with PC's. |
