So I have an interview *update*

I applied 5th March and got a phone call saying my interveiw is 24th April so its been well over a month of waiting.
Ive never had a formal interview -
Pub job years ago was a quick hello when can you start.
HG the boss took a liking to me and gave me the job there and then.
I applied for kitchen work again because I have 4 years experience within that role.
Its for Hampshire county council and the pay is flippin good.
20 hours but the same wages as working 48 in HG
However I can feel myself getting nervous already.
Its going to last for 45 minutes in front of a panel

I have to take several documentation also.

My main worry is - i have not really formal cloths - maybe one pair of black trousers but that is it.
The only jacket i have which looks like is a funky slight camo affect.
What do I do
Smart jeans black shoes, top and that jacket or is that just too 'common'

Am struggling already

Speculate to accumulate Louise.

Get thyself down to Primark/H&M/Asda/Tesco North Harbour and invest a few pennies in trousers, smart blouse (preferably in one colour - no crazy patterns), and jacket (which goes with the trousers).
You don't have to spend much, it's possible to get fully kitted out for under £30.

Keep to black/grey/navy and you can't go wrong.

As kwacker6r said you can always carry the jacket over your arm, best not to swing it over your shoulder though.

Remember all your paperwork.

The most important thing to wear will be a willing smile.

Shake hands at the start and end of the interview and have at least one question to ask the panel.

Make sure you have a confident answer if they question you on your previous job.

You will be fine, just try and relax and visualise giving really good answers to anything they throw at you.
You have the experience and the knowhow to get the job done well, all you have to do is tell them about it.

Being serious though, best of luck, and just be yourself in the interview. People can smell bullshit a mile off.

just be yourself and remember if its a panel (the interview for my current job was a panel of 4 poeple) too make eye contact with them all when answering questions that are general but be careful not to stare or change direction too fast.

also in my interview i took a list of the questions in to ask at the end becuase i knew i would forget them and they didnt have a problem with me reading them off a piece of paper.

I think Zephyrgirl has it pretty much spot on.

Remember, they picked 'you' for the interview, so obviously feel you have what it takes on paper, so just go along and be yourself.

You could always be a little cheeky and ask them what qualities they see in your from reading your CV, and what made them ask you along for the interview! Throwing that one at them will catch them out I bet you!!

But seriously, a bloke who was interviewed for our place was asked if he had any questions for the panel.

He said he would like to see the office and general facilities where he would be working if he took the job. They were so taken aback they gave him a tour there and then and I think they started to believe that he was deciding if he wanted to work for them rather than them deciding if he was suitable. They fell over themselves to offer him the job after that.

The thing with interviews is that you can more or less second guess the type of questions they are going to ask, so it is sometimes worthwhile to plan out the type of answer you will give if they ask such a question.

Don't make it too specific though, because if they word the question slightly differently it might throw you off.

In addition, make sure when thinking through these answers you always relate to your own experience, skills and abilities. This way you sound genuine as well as confident.

Can't agree more with maintaining eye contact with all interviewers there, it's like when one asks you a question, and during your answer you switch eye contact to another person, you're engaging them into it as well, this kind of switches the role in that your leading them, in a sense, and theres definately some subconcious advantage to it I'm sure.

Try not to fidget either, it's hard to keep a check on that because half the time you don't even realise your doing it.

Take advantage of the glass of water they'll offer you - I know when I'm talking under pressure my mouth gets dry, plus it buys you a few precious seconds to get your mind straight again - though I'd avoid doing a 'victory sip' after every question

I'm sorry, this is the second thread for a few weeks about this question and I find myself wondering how much people really care about themselves.

An interview is a formal process of a job application. It doesn't matter what job it is, you always have to give your best. If you have to make a small investment in a decent outfit, then bloody well do it! If you don't get the job then you will be missing more than £200 for a decent outfit.

It beggars belief sometimes. We are in the midst of a global recession, yet people still do not seem willing to give themselves that perfect first impression.

I suppose on the upside it means that there are less people really "challenging" for jobs.

I always prepare some questions I think I might want to ask at the end, as usually I cannot think of anything at the time, because my head is buzzing with what we have talked about during the interview.

Things like working times, flexi time, holidays, how many people will be in your immediate team, who will be your team leader/supervisor, is there a dress code etc.

Getting out a notebook in order to ask such questions, shows that you are organised and ready and prepared. It's a tiny thing but I have been told many times, that they have been impressed by it.

Taking notes is a good way to remember things they have said, so you don't start thinking about what was said...plus they may answer some of the questions that you have prepared already.

Do as Zephyrgirl has suggested regarding dress code. You can easily pick up a smart white blouse from George or Tesco for less than £10 easily. Just wear that, black trousers and maybe a cardigan/jacket and you'll be fine.

My advice would be is to be honest about your skills, let them know what you can do and what you can't do. (they would find it out sooner or later anyway and saves the embarassment)

Keep an open mind, show your interest in the job - most employers don't mind if you don't know everything, but seem enthusiastic about it.

This worked out for me in the past few interviews I had. Oh and I still don't own a suit, but still managed to get jobs without any troubles.

Be confident, and you won't need any luck. .

Popped into Asda - Pick up a pair of smart black trousers for £4 (sale)
Blue/white shirt which looks nice £6 some cheap girly necklace for a one of wear (not cheap looking just better then my chunck manly one )£3 So all in all a bargain.
Think I look nice - altho its sooo not me - tos really smart looking
