I really wouldn't mind one of these as they are an impreza but with a bit more family practicality. Obviously as a rule they aren't going to be much different from the normal saloon shape. But what things are there to look out for with them when buying?

I know there are a few owners on here, so any help is much appreciated. Thumbs Up

You'll be wanting a WRX then. The GX 2.0 is rubbish. It only makes 130bhp and yet it has the same kind of fuel consumption as the Turbo WRX. They don't make STi wagons, so that leaves you with a WRX.

The WRX is a good solid car, very reliable unless stupidly tuned, they handle well, stop well and have a reasonablle turn of speed.

However, 23-25 mpg is the best you'll get from one, if its anything like mine anyway. Parts aren't that expensive, and servicing is not as expensive as you think, but its not exactly what I'd call cheap. If something goes wrong expect big bills. The exhaust manifold and turbo pipework is expensive. The Turbos are expensive.

Supposedly Turbos and Clutches are at the end of their life at 50k miles, but mine has done 57k and is perfectly fine. Clutches are expensive to replace because of where they are on the car, and they are large and tough due to the four wheel drive. The Bugeye models will be cheaper because they aren't as soughtafter as the 'classic' style or the 'blobeye' or 'peanut eye' style.

Scoobynet is worth a look if you want further info. Thumbs Up Smile

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I drive a Discovery so there aint much surprise there Laughing

I really do seem to have my heart set on the old style one and definately the WRX. I've been keeping my eye on fleabay for them but the prices seem to range so differently that it throws me completely on where to start as a good price. Turbo's and clutches are always a good start so ta for that! It's good to have a baseline on mileage and issues.

I'm used to turbo engines though, so I understand the need for good servicing and maintenence.

No real major common issues with them then?

I don't really know where to be specific in my questions as like I've already said, there are so many about and at such varied prices with no routine pattern in condition etc that it becomes rather confusing. Laughing

I'll agree with that, I had a 2.0 Sport saloon, 125bhp and pretty damn slow with the same fuel economy as a UK turbo or WRX, about 30mpg.

Clutch started slipping in mine at about 80k, was told it was very expensive to swap, cheapest quote I had though was about £300, I sold it instead Smile

It was a nice car to drive though, very comfortable and great handling, sounded nice too.
