Weekly maintenance should have prevented it. When was the last time you checked the tension of it?

My chain came off my city fly twice. Both times quite lucky as the back wheel didn't lock up. After much fiddling me and my Dad decided the cush drives had gone because the sprocket could wobble more than it should be able to.

I check mine weekly, and it slacks off so quickly over a week it's silly. Part of my weekly wash and check procedure. Thumbs Up

2-3k? That's mad! How slack was it compared to what the manual said after that?

Dad's transalp did 50,000 miles on a chain... when he came to changing it he said they chain was fine, it was more that the front sprocket was shagged. The only time it got adjusted was when the back wheel had to come off for what ever reason (mainly new tyres) .

DID gold x-ring chain with a scotoiler and standard honda sprockets.

Lube it once a week with Silkolene Chain Lube, what I use on my kart, top stuff. Thumbs Up

No clutch dumping, feed in nice and slow.

Washed by hand! Wash and wax! When I do clean it with the pressure washer (very rarely!) I dodge the chain.

Yeah, def. due a new chain soon, we shall see when! Laughing

Confused what is this chain and lube and tension that you speak off Rolling Eyes

I know little of these strange words as I've been shafted for years Wink

On-topic, lucky not to break and engine casing with a chain whipping around. Maintenance is certainly best for preventing expensive accidents.

Thumbs Up

£30 for a chain but change the sprockets at the same time looking at £40-50 for chain and sprockets

Yep i do weekly maintenance checks and the tension was fine its the sprockets which are really shagged! Iv got a chain and sprockets set on its way to me now!

The chain was dry i dont think i had oiled it in the last month or so but i wouldnt think that would make it come off would it?

I'm pretty lax when it comes to chain maintenance. Lube it every 500 miles or so, proper clean and lube every 1000 less if it's been left for a while and only check the slack once in a blue moon.
Needless to say I paid for it, the chain came off my marauder when I was about to leave uni. Rather than call someone out, I stuck it back on like you would a pushbike chain when you were little and rode home. The adjuster was stuck fast and the socket wouldn't turn it. Called the garage from home and they said it would be £40 to come collect it, so I rode it in with slack chain. Looking back on it, it was a retarded and dangerous thing to do, but nothing happened so Thumbs Up

The RS50 i used to own chain was normally the right tension for about 20mins after tightening then it would go slack and flap off the swing arm >< ,
and no it wasnt a fault with the sprockets, swingarm, lock nuts or nything.. it was just plain shite.
Maybe a realy dodgy chain though?

The chain on my CD250 seems to go from being correctly tensioned to pretty slack in about 250 miles. I replaced it and the sprockets about a year (5000 miles) ago, but with the cheapest one I could find. Won't be making that mistake again. That said I'm not exactly religious about chain maintenance.

Getting a good chain makes a huge huge difference, when I got my ZZR the dealer put a fresh chain and sprockets on, a couple of months down the line and I was having to adjust the thing twice a week no matter what I tried on it to keep it in good shape. In the end I got a new did chain and sprockets which promptly did ~12000 miles with barely a handful of adjustments. With the way I rode that thing it'd have probably outlasted the rest of the bike with a scottoiler Laughing
