I've struggled to find time to progress this, but have made some headway since this thread:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=156246

Ok, so I bought this top yoke with risers scruffily welded on for a tenner off eGay.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/topyoke1.jpg

Decided to tidy it up as I had some satin black and lacquer hanging around.

I hate waiting for coats of paint to dry!! I have no patience Mr. Green

Primer:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep082004.jpg

4 coats of black, I think:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep082009.jpg
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep082010.jpg

Lacquered up and ready to put the front end back together!

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep082019.jpg

Here is my home-made bearing press (patent Stinkwheel):

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep082022.jpg

Cost £1.55 for the threaded bar. Sure better than £30 for a 'proper' tool and worked a treat!

Yay!

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep082024.jpg

Time for handlebars:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep083009.jpg

And headlights!

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep084006.jpg

And they bloody work too Laughing

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep084008.jpg

I also decided to 'spruce up' my front calipers which had just been serviced...well the red hammerite spray was on offer!!! Shifty
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep082011.jpg

Need to finish the other one, I have an extended top brake hose on order so once that's done I can fit and bleed them.

Also received this:
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep083001.jpg

off our very own LukeVFR, it will go on eventually but I'm gonna try to MOT it with the shit original one on...

Just need to wire front indicators up, secure bottom yoke (lost my bolts!) stick horn on, and connect speedo.

Put new plugs in yesterday, and a gallon of fresh fuel. Battery is on charge so I can start it properly to drain the oil.

Need to look at the rear brake too, then it should hopefully be rideable and ready to MOT, fingers crossed!

Oh, and taking the seat off to get to the battery, I got in a fight with a grabrail bolt, resulting in this:
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/super_jo/gix15sep084012.jpg
Ow. Crying or Very sad Even worse once I realised it wasn't a Halfords Pro socket, so I wouldn't get a free replacement Laughing

Errrr....kinda like it (even though I'm sick of seeing GSXR streetfighters). Just don't matt black what bodywork is left! Only things I don't like are the fork gay-ters and the presence of one of those god awful universal speedos. Didn't you have the standard clocks? Cause you can still buy all the rubber bits if they are a bit wobbly.

Gaitors are a bit ming, but as it'll get some motorway miles this winter I thought I'd better protect them Laughing

I'm not sure on the speedo myself - I do have the original clocks, but gave the bracket away.

Don't really want bulky clocks though. I did pick up a bicycle speedo for 3 quid from tescos yesterday, am contemplating that. Thinking Smile

Matt black is staying well away from this machine Hand Laughing I was gonna do shiny black with some fancy airbrushing on the tank, but the original colours have really grown on me.

Need to fill the dented tank and touch up the paint, then I think it will stay red and black for now Thumbs Up Cool

I was thinking of commenting on the seat, on the one hand it is old skool 80s cool, but on the other it is faded and essentially now pink... I think it'll look better in black.

One thing that I'm ashamed to say is really bothering me is your bar furniture, space it out properly, the gaps between grips and switchgears and levers is really annoying me Embarassed

Laughing

Don't worry, I sorted that after the last pics were taken. Switchgears were just finger-tightened on for fixing the bars on, and I just stuck the left grip on for the last photos.

Then saw the awful gappage Shocked Laughing

I need my own photographer really, I get so into it and forget to take pics at the vital stages...

Hi, it looks like you got a really good bike coming on. But just wondered if I could ask if the front brake master cylinder and clutch master cylinder are sitting at a bit of a steep angle now they are on the Renthal bars.

The tops of the master cylinders normally sit a lot flatter when they are on the standard bars. My main concern would be that the front brake doesn't get an airlock in the master cylinder piston chamber when the bike is leaned over on the sidestand.

It probably is a quick easy fix, either adjusting or changing the bars, hopefully someone else will be along in a bit to varify if this is ok or not, as I am not sure. There is a pic below of a similar GSXR streetfighter and you can see the difference.
It is smart for 20+ year old bike though. Nice one Thumbs Up

Well spotted.
Depends where the pick up holes are though. If they are on the insides, Then its probably okay. But if they are on the Out side's, I'd be watching those sight glasses like a hawk!

Back to OP.

Gixxer's looking good though. 10000x better than it did when you first got it! Cool
I'm with Jake on this one though. It's crying out for some 1100 forks.

Thanks Pete, I'll bear that in mind and have a good look when I'm putting the brake system together. That's one of these things that you just don't know when it's my first (proper) project! Thumbs Up

Yep, I do want a nice black USD front end eventually. It will have to wait for funds though, as I'll have to get the whole front end so I'm looking at £350+ easy! Plus a rear wheel to match.

Don't put 11 forks on it. Go for some of the latest USD radials. Break from tradition. Cool

Looks good though. Thumbs Up

Anti-dive on the current forks is super old school.

As long as you can lean the bike right over to fill the resevoirs and bleed the systems they should be alright, but if you tried doing it with the bike upright it looks like you'd only get about 1/2 as much fluid in as you should.

If it doesnt work for whatever reason I have a resevoir and master cylinder off an NTV knocking about that you can have for p&p.

Didn't really get owt done this week, had a nightmare doing the simplest jobs.

Oil & filter - my socket wrench was wrong size, took me 4 different motor factors to find one. When I did unscrew it, the fucker had no way out of the stupid header pipes. It's trapped, like in a little cage Crying or Very sad

So will have to at least loosen or even remove the twats, just to change the filter Rolling Eyes

Did get the other caliper painted though, will try to fit them this week Mr. Green

Tristan the - may take you up on the NTV mc Thumbs Up I have a bad feeling the original's angle will be a problem. Sad

Luke, I was at least expecting the shock to arrive wrapped in a photo of your cock. Neutral

i'm using the standard slabby mastercylinders on my rethalled fighter with no problems...

only awkward bit is bleeding the systems due to the "on the piss" angle of the reservoirs, but once done they're fine

Quick update, without pics though.

Got the front calipers back on, they look cool (from a distance, get too close and you can see all the drips Laughing ) so I 'm happy there.

Got a longer top braided hose cheap off ebay.

Couldn't bleed them though, rounded master cylinder cap bolts which I will be able to sort in the next couple of days hopefully.

Finally got the oil filter off (had to remove the downpipes Mad ) and new one on & fresh oil.

Couldn't start it up though, couldn't get the pipes back on and ran out of time. Seems it has a full Micron system, no port gaskets used (typical, since I bought some Rolling Eyes ) and they are a bitch to refit on my own. Much knuckle scraping ensued in trying!! Sad

Fitted the horn, which was an arse. It originally fixed onto the headlight/fairing bracket. Was hard to find somewhere it wouldn't foul the forks/headstock.

Eventually put it on the brakeline splitter which is on the bottom yoke, so it sticks out under the headlights.

Looks wank though, anyone know of a (cheap) mini horn that will pass an MOT?

Had a proper look at my rear brake disc, realised it was worn to fuck. 3.5mm thickness when MINIMUM is 5.5!!! Shocked It was probably the original from 1986 Laughing Got a cheap replacement on the way. Thumbs Up

Need to strip the rear caliper and see if it's usable next, I assumed it was the problem with my rear brake not working, but more likely is the combo of worn disc and dead pads. Probably.

Might need a new battery as it doesn't last long after charging (when stood) and these bikes need a good battery or they'll refuse to start.

Then I can test ride and MOT the bugger!! Finally! Only taken 3 bloody months. Rolling Eyes I've got riding withdrawal soooo bad. Laughing

if you want the horn hidden all you gotta do is extend the wires to where ever you want to hide it ...

really easy if you think about it Rolling Eyes

i changed my filter the other day (standard 1100 downpipes for a slingshot), limited space but by rolling it around and juggling i got it out by the upper bend of the left downpipe, new one went in the same way ...

i use an old car cambelt and a piece of wood for a filter strap

Good progress. Very Happy When is the MOT? Does the R6 shock fit straight on? I still have the bolts if it makes it any easier... I was in hospital and asked my mum to post it so couldn't tell her what bolts to include... Let me know if you want me to dig 'em out if it'll make your life any easier... Wink

Cheers Luke, will be checking out how the shock needs to go on after the MOT (hopefully Laughing )...pipes are pretty solid, dunno when they were put on since it's a replacement system. It's just the fact they all move around independantly while I'm trying to line them back up!!

Hoping to kick ass this weekend to have it ready to take for MOT next Friday, but that's only if nowt else goes wrong... Rolling Eyes

Good news is I'm borrowing a CG to ride to work tomorrow Laughing been a good 7 weeks since the CB died and I've not rode a bike since.
