 Posted: 16:36 - 30 Aug 2009 Post subject: DIY ER6F Touring Seat.. |
 |
|
First a bit of history.. I've had my ER6F for 2 years now and enjoy
everything about it except the seat !! It had got to the point
where either I did something about the seat (again) or bought a
new bike.
On Friday last week I test drove a secondhand '07 BMW F800ST
(£5500) and an '07VFR800 (£6000). Actually preferred the Beemer
as it was a bit more comfy(lot better than the ER6). But, on
reflection I don't really want to spend 5 grand on a bike just to
cure numb bum/squashed-bollock problems ! So thought I'd have
a last ditch DIY attempt at fixing the crap standard seat.
The first attempt was a custom Bagster seat which I've had fitted
for a year which is a slight improvement on the standard seat, but
a trip up to Chester from the south coast was excruciating after
only 100miles.
So, what have I done ? Simply put and simply executed, I've
bought 2 bicycle gel seat covers and superglued them to the foam of
my standard seat. The gel covers were £13 from Halfords and the
staple gun (needed to put the seat cover back on) was £10 from
Argos. The job was pretty easy, taking about 2 hours, and results
feel good on a short half hour trip today. Bum =
Only down side is that the bicycle gel covers are pretty obvious to
see, but if it fixes the comfort issues I really don't care ! Besides for
short journeys I can attach my other custom seat when looks
matter..
Here's some pics :
i) The gel cover used (cut back to gel only) :

ii) In position (tried them in a few different places before
super-gluing to foam)

iii) Nail/staple gun used to fix the seat cover back on, yes you can
still see the gel covers !

iv) finished seat on the bike

Will report further after a long journey..
Martin
ps. disclaimer : If you try this at home don't blame me if you cock up ! ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125 "Vara" > Kawasaki ER6F "Smerf" > Triumph Sprint ST 1050 |

That looks so shit.
But for doing it. My Versys seat isn't exactly comfy neither. |

The TRX has a seat like a house brick! Its got a few scuffs here and there, could do with a recover and maybe a little extra padding. Not quite sure I'd use a bicycle seat like that though. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

I was gunna suggest you were a bit of a tart for taking looks over comfort on something as important as a seat, but looking at the pictures id do the same if my seat looks like its got 2 cocks hidden in it.
Good on you for actually modifying something to make it better instead of buying an expensive alternative though.
Cheers

Could the seats not have been cut into inch sized cubes and the even evenly across the seat before recovering? ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |
