Following on from this thread, I have managed to put a hole in my water pump cover bit, fluid has leaked out everywhere.

I cant afford to have the bike off of the road, so I'm thinking about temp. fixing it with chemical metal, my dad said this wont work because its under pressure and it will come off, Anybody know if this is right? Otherwise I'm just going to give it a go anyway...

Cheers

Cooling system will never go above 1.1bar (about 16psi) after that the rad cap will bypass into the overflow bottle. How big is the hole (pics req'd).

Ill try and get some pics later, the hole IIRC is about 1cm circular with thin metal surrounding it where obviously it has scraped along and only worn fully through in the centre, i guess ill take the cover off and start on the inside, at least that way any pressure is pushing against the remaining metal of the pump cover.

Maybe you could use some wire mesh as well to help make the chemical metal stronger.

Good idea Thumbs Up

I'll have to see whats to hand in my mates garage, he's normaly got lots of useful bits and bobs so wire mesh is is pretty likely.

How much clearance on the inside between the housing and the impellor? If you have as much as 2mm i'd think about turning down a bolt so the head fits snug on the inside and then fitting a thin gasket under it and a nut on the outside to plug the hole.

Pretty much left as soon as i'd written my last post.

Took the cover off and used the chemical metal to fix the hole, the hole was smaller than what i'd thought so it was an easy enough fix Thumbs Up its leaking a very very small amount but ive put a bit more over the outside just now and hopefully that will sort it Thumbs Up

The biggest issue i had was the gasket, i managed to really mangel the old one getting the cover off, luckily i had some gasket paper laying around from a job i'd planned on doing yesterday, so i made up a gasket with that and it seems so far to be holding fine Mr. Green

Thanks for the help and advice Thumbs Up Karma
