I'm off to hospital tomorrow to get the rod and screws removed from my femur! I know it's a debatable subject having metalware removed but I just feel I'll be able to get on with my life if I have it removed.

I've had a bit of a read up online about it and it seems complications with the surgery are common as it's so unpredictable. If I wake up tomorrow and get told it's still there I might kill someone Very Happy

Recovery time is 4-6 weeks on cruthes and then away I go...don't think I've ever been so scared in my life I've even been having nightmares of surgeons chasing me lol

Will keep you posted how the op goes (not that anyones cares), hopefully I'll be back here for friday but I'm gonna try get home on thursday!

<is scared>

Hi

Good luck, as long as they did not bugger the thread putting it in it should be ok. You may have some serious brusies on the lower leg/chest after as well as the leg hurting.

Regards
Charlotte

Dischord: you'll be fine. The complicated bit (putting the rod/screws in) has already gone ok, and I'm pretty sure that reading about other people's bad experiences isn't going to do you any favours. If there were that many people being mutilated by surgeons removing pins from their legs, then they wouldn't bother putting pins in in the first place: too many lawsuits.

Thanks for the kind words you lot Thumbs Up

The main reason I want it out is to hopefully eliminate nasty side effects as I grow up, the constant pain is getting pretty tiresome. The main residual damage will be to the muscles but this can be restored with good exercise!

Hopefully I'll get to keep the metal rod and screws been wanting to see them for ages Very Happy

Had a metal rod removed from my femur but they couldn't remove the plate and six screws because there was too much bone growth over them.I've just had my collarbone plated and can already feel it under the skin so i will be having that out ASAP.

Good luck with it, Thumbs Up

Interesting as I have never really considered taken the plates out of my arm. When I had the bone graft I was pretty worried about the risk of nerve damage when they reopened to operate.

How do you feel it limits you? EDIT: Just saw your reason, do you still get lots of pain??

Best of luck!!! Im sure it will all go well!

I have a full length nail/rod in my tibia (with 4 screws) and a 3/4 length plate on my femur (4 screws iirc). I never knew they caused pain, i just guessed it was because my leg was so FUBAR'd (my consultants words, but in a more polite and medical manner Laughing ).

I have the fracture clinic on the 24th june (for the 5th time Crying or Very sad ), will speak to him about removing them then. Do they decide or do you just ask?

I'm not going to go in demanding them removing, i will just talk to him about when/why they remove them. But considering i get constant pain in my leg (dull ache when sat down, more of an ache if i'm stood for a short period and then quite bad pain if i am on my feet alot like at work) i will discuss options with him.

Last time i went, i had some more xrays and there wasn't any bone growth around the plate, but it was only 11 month ago that i had the accident. How long ago was it since you damaged/broke your bones?

Well from my findings of the NHS they do not let you keep the old stuff removed from your ops..me thinks they keep them filed for future use...either that or the surgeon uses them on his boat for fittings!!! I tell you the truth Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I'm so glad that they didn't pin and plate me. Things took a little longer and I still ache from time to time, but sounds like I got the better deal.
