In the worst option ie the need to turn back to Turkey to Trazbon (itself a 3 day ride which is over horrendous terrain) I will burn one entry into Russia , I had intended to enter at Semipalantinsk. Worse case scenario I need to choose between mongolia or Kazakhstan + Uzbekistan + Kyrgistan + Tajikistan.

Convince me , Kazakhstan is virtually a transit country though as there is nothing there just 100s of km of empty silty clay desert.

I have till oh Mid day about 9am UK time to decide as this is when I will know the outcome good or bad about the Azerbaijan visa.

So go ahead convince me

I've read tremendous things about both countries, but personally I would go for Mongolia.

Is it true that Mongolia has less than 100 miles of paved roads? I don't think there is another country in the world like Mongolia, it would be like stepping back in time. The same could be said for parts of Africa 50 years ago. How long will it be before Mongolia catches up with the rest of the world, ruining its charm and denying you that experience if you wanted to go in the future.

From a practical point of view, the lack of paved roads would be a bad thing, but i think whichever way you go you are going to encounter that. Another practical reason to do Mongolia is that you will be crossing less borders, therefore reducing the amount of trouble you are likely to get into in that respect. Isn't it a failed border crossing which has forced you to turn back?

Whatever you do, follow your heart and stay safe. Really enjoyed reading your adventures on the blog so far Very Happy.

I've not failed to get into azerbaijan yet its just I've decided to explore the other options that are open to me , some may say this is a lack of confidence on my part regarding the sucess of the visa but I can only try.

Mongolia it is after turning back from Azerbaijan I have decided to burn one entry into Russia maybe via Ukraine as I feel I am too inexperienced to ride the desert of Kazakhstan twice unsupported and do not want to hang around Baku , which is a nasty place...

I heard on the radio today that England beat Azerbaijan 7-0 in under 21s football, so you've probably done the right thing Wink
