PostPosted: 20:46 - 26 May 2009    Post subject: My Honda CBR 400RR - A.K.A Project 'Plastic Fantastic' Reply with quote

Before I even purchased my Honda CBR 400RR I knew I would never keep it stock looking. I know many people love it in it's stock form (maybe it has something to do with nostalgia and the bike they rode when they first got a 'bigger bike') but for me modern sports bikes have always been better looking.

I also don't at this point deem it necessary for me to own a bike with a larger engine, I personally think the 400 is more capable than I am and I have no intention of being a 'straight-line warrior' on a large capacity engined bike. To add to this people I've spoken to and others on this site tend to find themselves down-grading as they just don't use the power.

So basically my intention from the beginning was modernise my bike, I think ever since seeing Craigs VFR 400 in it's 'Tyga - Konica Minolta' form I knew I wanted to go along a similar route with whatever 400 I ended up with. After doing some research I decided I'd either buy a CBR or VFR 400, but the scream of the inline-four won me over. I just can't get over that ridiculous noise it makes at red-line.

I've already completed a fair bit of this project as it has been on-going for a while but I don't want to spend my whole day writing this so I'll update the thread when I have time.

Anyway, I'm sure you're getting bored of reading, so here are some photos:

My Honda CBR 400RR when I bought it:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/my_honda_cbr_400rr_-_standard__side_.jpg

I was awoken at way-too-early hours of the morning by a delivery company when they delivered a few boxes:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/box_of_new_fairings.jpg

I was glad to find it was all well packed:

The Fairings:

The bike is pretty much finished now, but I'll update lot's of the stages in between the beginning and where I've got to now this when I get a little more time, in the meantime I hope you're liking what you see and thanks for looking! Mr. Green

Uh Oh.

Thats not a TYGA kit is it? It's a "K-Series Conversions" Kit.
Saw and NC29 at ebbsfleet once with the KSC kit on it. Wasnt really what I was expecting from the photos if I'm honest.

How much did it all set you back (The new plastics that is). And what paint job are you set on getting?

Should of just splashed out on an Ohlins rear shock, And a set of NC35 forks. They are a direct fit for the NC29.

See thats debatable. I could out ride plenty of CBR6s when I had the NC29. Weather that was down to my confidence, The set up of my particular bike, Or because it was a better handling bike. I dont know.

I do think the "400s are the best handling bikes" theory is a bit of a myth though.

I prefer to think that owning a 400cc bike makes you a good rider. Because you have to ride fast to be fast, Rather than rely on a powerful engine to get the speed back up once you're out of the bend.

those new fairings look gay as fuck. should have just bought some side panels instead of ruining the whole bike.

Hey guys, I know the original post is pretty long to read but to those asking what I intend to do, all of this stuff that I'm posting is already done, I'm just posting up bits of it at a time as it's pretty long writing this stuff out.

Firstly; sorry you don't like it Mudskipper, you were one of the people I was referring to as those I knew who'd prefer it staying stock.

Fnatic: Yes, that was my Aprilia RS125. It's now owned by someone else on this forum though.

Binge: I was hoping you'd post because as far as I'm aware you'd modified your CBR 400RR to a large extent...

Quote:

I will probably do the Ohlins rear shocknext, although I vaguely remember you saying a CBR 600 shock was a good mod too, which is supposedly better?

You're right though, this is the 'K-Conversions' kit. I decided not to go with the Tyga Kit as I'm not a big fan of the headlights, they look too thin for my liking. Just to note if anyone on here is considering buying one of their kits all of the bodywork had the brackets made up to fit the bike by myself and my father, K-Conversions stated that modification to the sub-frame was unnecessary which is a load of rubbish. The reg/rec and front and rear brake reservoirs had to be re-routed. Basically all of the brackets on the sub-frame had to be cut-off and everything it held had to have new brackets made under the new tail-section or the tail-section simply would not fit.

This whole project by no means could have been completed by myself and K-conversions really do try to sell this kit to you as if to say it's a case of removing the old and putting on the new and I'd just like to warn anyone who thinks it is, it really is not and if you're not particularly mechanically-minded or not a fan of lot's of D.I.Y. If you do buy the kit and aren't great at D.I.Y purchase the 'fitting kit' as I'msure you'll be lost without it. Although they essentially charge you over £100 for bits of metal I'm sure cost them less than £20 to make. Hence me opting out of purchasing those and instead my father helped me produce our own.

Also, luckily my father happens to be a mechanic and is good friends with insurance bodywork specialists. Thus I've had all the bodywork strengthened (which took a lot of effort from what I'm told) before it was primered and painted.

I went for the Repsol Honda scheme as it's my faviroute race-replica paint-work which you'll see when I get around to posting photos of the painted bodywork.

A few old vs. new comparison photos:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/front_fairings_-_old_vs._new.jpg

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/mudguard_-_old_vs._new.jpg

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/seat_unit_-_old_vs._new.jpg

I then had to remove bits before I took it away to be painted:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/assorted_lights___seats.jpg

Photos of the primer on the bodywork. These were photos after the first coat, as you can see they were sanded down again and re-filled as my fathers friends told me the bodywork was far too weak be used and it wouldn't last very long as it was. By the time I'd gone back for the second time the bodywork had been fully painted though so I have no photos of primer coats inbetween. Sorry for the poor picture quality, these photos were taken with my phone:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/primered_petrol_tank.jpg

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/assorted_primered_bodywork.jpg

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/primered_front_mudguard.jpg

Thanks again for looking... Thumbs Up

But I put it to you had you been riding a 600 in these situations you'd of been at least as quick, amirite?

My 600 was easily faster than my old Gullarm. Around corners, on the brakes, in a straightline, over distance..it had the smaller bike nailed. More fun though? Well...I sold the 600 as I eventually found it a lil boring. I guess it was just too good for me.

Interesting project - not to my particular tastes, but hope it comes together nicely. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the comments everyone... Thumbs Up

garyboy-palaboy: I love your Pramac-CBR400RR, it looks brilliant in my opinion. Would you be able to send me a link to where you bought the exhaust system and clocks for your bike from please?

I begun test fitting my fairings before I sent them off to be painted, the front fairings required lots more brackets being made up to keep it steady which surprised me considering the rear end had to be much stronger as you/a passenger would have to sit on the tail unit so it'd have to be strengthened with brackets underneath so it didn't just snap when it was sat on. Another point that K-Conversions very kindly forgot to mention when selling these fairings, therefore the only part that was a direct fit was the front mudguard. Both the front end and back end needed brackets to be fitted properly.

Some photos of rough test fitting. Please be aware this isn't exactly how the front end actually ended up looking, it now points down far more. I simply put it on to know roughly what I needed to make up to get it all to fit properly:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/begun_test_fitting_new_fairings_on_cbr.jpg

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/test_fitted_new_fairings_on_cbr.jpg

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/test_fitted_rear_end_on_cbr.jpg

I knew I needed new front indicators, as the original ones were huge boxes and just wouldn't look right on the new fairing set, this is where the carbon fetish begun:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/carbon_fibre_indicators.jpg

I decided to start matching bits of my bike with carbon, which I'm now thinking may start going over-board as I have a constantly growing carbon shopping list. I bought carbon levers to start with:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/carbon_fibre_levers.jpg

A little old vs. new comparison:

New:

Why didn't you just buy a cheap shit bike with all this tat already fitted rather than buying a half decent one and running it down to council estate taste's.

I'd refund the faux carbon flushmount indicators. Get some LED flush fits or mini catseyes instead. You've gone into all the effort in customising your bike, and yet you neglect all the little details. It's all the little details that count mate; and faux carbon is not where it's at.. PLEASE do NOT refer to it as carbon!

In my 1st semester composites exam I should have answered this question

"what does the anisotropic properties of carbon fibre weave have on mechanical strength?"

Based on your definition of "carbon", I'd reply

"Dunno mate, it's just as good as cast ally with some black grey chequer pattern painted on!"

Maybe i'm just being a pedantic materials engineer.

I was going to be a little harsher on overall response but seeing that you've invested quite a bit of money in this project, I'd be interested to see what it'll turn out like in the end.

But yeah, NO fake carbon and none of those cheap ass bike-it 9 quid for a pair flush mounts!

Wow, whole lot of hate his this project. Neutral

While it isnt to my taste I think its cool what your doing, yea a CBR600RR would be better but there are lots of them on the road.

How much are those kits? Repsol should look good at the end i reckon. How long till you expect to finish?

Also If you thinking of paying out for Ohlins then I would def recommend some pazzo levers as they feel really nice Thumbs Up

Farbon (Fake Carbon Wink ) = gash

Don't like the fairings either, for me you'd have been better off getting the OE fairings redone, then tarting up the working parts.

Allow repsol... You might as well go for a look that flows

https://www.asphaltandrubber.com/wp-content/gallery/playboy-lcr-honda-randy-depuniet/playboy-lcr-honda-randy-depuniet-10.jpg

THAT would be a first!

The only comment I have to make about the tyga kit is the perceived appearance of the lights. They don't do it for me. I would have thought that you could save a bit of money by getting the race fairings and modifying them to fit projector style lenses. And fit an LED strip at the back on a detatchable numberplate brakcet. I was totally gutted when I saw them butcher up a ZXR250 only to put some crud lights on it. Nothing wrong about the shape of the fairings on any of their bikes mind; again it's the smaller details that make the difference.
