My ZXR400 has recently gone to the garage following a worrying knocking sound in the engine.
It turns out the cam is now badly pitted and would need replacing at a cost of about £1k inc labour. It's cost me £150 to find this out Neutral .

So, it's time to cut my losses.
What is the thing to do?
Should I just flog is as it is or is it worth actually stripping and selling for parts separtely?

The bike's in otherwise good condition with 18k miles on the clock.

I really don't have a clue what to do with it.

Does the 750 engine fit in these?

If you search about the breakers sites, you'll probably get a complete engine for around the £2-300 mark.

You'd probably get cams for somewhat less but you might need followers too, depends what they are like.

You could buy another ZXR for not much more than that! Buy a 2nd hand engine and make friends with people on here that could fit it. Smile

You have 3 choices:

A) Sell the bike on ebay as a non runner. = £500?

B) Pay a mechanic to fix it. = £1000+

C) Get the bits 2nd hand and have a go at fixing it yourself. = £100 with a chance it fucking it all up, then go for plan A.

Personally i'd go for plan C, especially if you have a mechanically minded friend.

If I remember right don't ZZR600 engines fit the ZXR4 frame? Although the zorst system would need changing as well.

No they dont. ZX6R engines fit, with alot of work. And money, And time.

Buy a 2nd hand motor off ebay, bring the lot tom me and I will fit it for you for £50. Takes about 3 hours. Done it 4 times in the last 4 years.

Firstly, tell them to do no more work on it.

Get it home.

Speak to Piper or Kent, they will sort the pitting out on the current cams and re-profile them to a fast road / race spec for around £200. Less if it's just sorting the pitting out. Phone them and ask, they are very helpfull. Thumbs Up

You may also need cam followers depending on their condition (x16 max).

You'll also need a new head gasket, prob about £40.

Shame your not closer to me as I could help you out with it all.

First thing I'd do is get the bike back home and get the motor out.

Thumbs Up

Cams don't pit on the ZXR's in 18k miles unless it has been run low on oil. I've seen ZXR's at 50k still on its original top end.

First i'd be asking to see the cams formy self because I find it a tad unbelievable that this is causing your knocking.

Second, that quote of 1k will be mainly parts brand new from Kawasaki (I think new cams are £500 odd on their own without all the gaskets etc). So get your self on ebay/breakers and source your self some second hand cams for 50 quid (they have a very low second hand value as they are hardly ever needed by anyone). Get the mechanic to pop them in for you, I am guessing he has the top end off already so the labour will be minimal.

Second this. Thumbs Up

Kwak engineering is generally very good. Ok the 400's gaskets are the talking point but unless it's been raced hard from cold on each start up, it was low on oil, or 18K is actually 118k then I cannot fathom why you'd have pitted the cams and I cannot imagine that would cause a loud knocking noise either. Loud tapping, some other odd noises but not knocking. What was the problem you had to get it in the garage in the first place?

Secondly you can get some cams from most breakers(use an online breakers search (https://www.bike-breakers.info/) I've had good results for ZXR parts.

Cam installation is pretty easy but if in doubt someone from here local or a garage would happily do it for you for a small fee.
