Hey guys.

Had a wee problem with the CG today, decided to cut out on me half way home.

Started up fine after a few kicks and rode fine all the way home, except it was jumping about in 5th gear.

So i got the thing home and took the chain cover off. And the chain was tight, and the sprockets were fine as far as i could see.

Turned the wheel round a few times and all was good.

Then had a look at the engine....

Shocked

Oil everywhere.

Help! Sad

under the cluch cable.

My guess is the gasket is gone.... And not really surprised seeing as the guy before me hadn't been near it with a touch of oil never mind a spanner.

Then decided to check the Oil level as it was HOT.

https://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt325/duncdmc/DSC00012.jpg?t=1245166913

Only topped up the oil yesterday, was just under the max indicator.

Done about 100 odd miles today i think.... been out for quite a while, but no way should it have drank all the oil.

And this is under the gear lever, pretty mucky with oil.

So... Causes and fixes?

Been thinking about a new engine... one with electric start so i can add a couple hundred onto the resale value once i get the time to clean it all up. So if it's new engine time, its not too much of a kick in the balls Laughing

Cheers

Hi
Just looks like the head gasket has gone, i think its just a rubber ring on top.
The last picture if that is the gear selector doesnt look bad as the front sproket throws oil or whatever lube you put on off around that area and it runs down to there and then onto the stand, its why i remove my front sproket cover each month and clean around mine.
The oil around the base of the cylinder could just be the leaking head gasket, replace the rubber ring clean it all of including the area down below and top up oil see how you go from there.
Hope it helps. Remember theres only about a litre of oil in there.

It looks like the base gasket and the valve cover gasket is leaking. The head gasket looks fine but i would replace it anyway if you are going to do the base gasket.

What do you mean by the chain been tight? Have you set the chain free play? If it is too tight it can cause the surging you are talking about and strange gear change problems.

Righto cheers, i'll have a look at that and replace as necessary.

And by tight, i mean not loose Laughing

The free play is as it says on the chain guard. 15 mil i think.

Going to completely change the chain and sprockets again, The ones i have just now aren't the best, they were all i could afford at the time. Hopefully that will sort the bugger out.

I'll get some pics up as i work in the other thread i have, the cleanup and colour change one Thumbs Up

Cheers for the info.

By the look of it the rocker cover seems to be the worst part of it. Check its not leaking down the and resting on the crankcase before you decide its the base gasket too.

The base gasket is an easy fix and if it drinking oil then there is your oppurtunity for a bit of a top-end overhaul. There still seems to be oil on the dipstick so just make sure you are testing it fairly by wiping off all the excess oil and then resting disptick in and not screwing it in (might be the opposit though and thats why you are not getting a reading, im not sure of how it is on the CG)

Gear level seal is probably worn aswell, again an easy fix. Thumbs Up

I have a CG too, when I saw the oil around the gear lever and underneath I too thought I had an oil leak but when you take off the front sprocket cover it's fairly obvious its all just getting flung off from there, I wouldn't worry about that too much Thumbs Up

As the other have said it looks like you have a gasket leak up top and it's leaked down around your clutch, I'm not sure how likely it is for two gaskets to have failed at once? Maybe they have but either way I don't think it's a replacement engine job just yet Very Happy

Yea i did know that, just checking in case it was something more serious Laughing

Cheers

And i wouldn't be surprised if the two had failed, the bike has been SERIOUSLY neglected.

When i got it, the chain was so rusted up that it was sticking to the sprockets as the wheel turned. So obviouslt the guy had no idea what he was doing.

I'm looking at a new engine anyway, getting really fed up with the kickstart Laughing

Cheers

That does sound pretty neglected, poor CG Sad As for the electric start, I don't blame you Very Happy Mine is an electric start, I much prefer to just press the starter button than mess around with a kickstart!

So what year is your one?

I might have a shot at rebuilding the whole engine, cleaning it as i go, and see about fitting a new starter clutch/gear with the starter motor....

Cheers

Mine's the newer style on an 05 plate, I was lucky though as it had been in storage for years and I got it fairly cheap Smile So I've been able to look after it, I do think the CG are a great bike for what they're made for. Glad to see you're going to do yours up Very Happy

It must be a nice feeling to ride knowing that some of your own blood sweat and tears is helping that engine chug along! Go for it Mr. Green

You can get full gasket sets for the cg's very cheaply now that should cover all the seals you need, yeh too much tension on the chain can cause probs with the drive, it puts extra strain on the drive shaft etc, I agree leave a little bit of free play in the chain.
