Hello all, followinf on from something said in this thread about copper washers: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=176755

I have a very slight oil leak and i think it's coming from the banjo boolt as highlighted in this diagram:

https://www.davidaitchison.co.uk/sump.jpg

I thought the washers that were on there previous to me taking it apart were the wrong type, they weren't copper but looked more like steel, so i replaced them with copper ones. But the leak remains.

Should i be heating up washers to the point of glowing and letting them cool before fitting? I thought that copper being a soft metal as standard would crush naturally.

Thoughts?

Is it tightned to the correct figure ?

Are all the joints clean and smooth ?

A new copper washer, should not need anything doing to it to seal the joint.

Hi

I agree with the above. Heating copper washers up is a trick used when reusing them and shouldn't be necessary with new ones.

Suspect the old one was an alloy washer.

All the best

Yeah, everything is clean and it's as tight as i can possibly get it, granted it isn't torqued up, maybe that's the next step, but it's pretty tight.

It's due an oil change soon so i'll get into it then.

Might be overtightened, 25nm isn't alot.

I tightened a bolt to abou 55nm just with a spanner, so if your doing it as tight as you can, it's probably overtightened.

Torque wrench ftw!

Hmm - Fair point. I'll get a hold of a torque wrench.
